It's been a ruthless and triumphant return to competition for Sinner after his three-month suspension for breaching anti-doping protocols. If anything, Sinner has improved - he's physically stronger and coming off one of the biggest demolitions in recent memory after crushing Casper Ruud 6-0 6-1 in the quarter-finals.
Incredibly, Sinner has now won 11 consecutive matches against top 10 players in straight sets. That's 24 straight sets against the game's elite - only John McEnroe has a longer record after claiming 28 straight sets in 1984. The Italian is now on a 25-match winning streak overall, with his last 16 best-of-three matches ending in straight sets. That doesn't bode well for Paul, who is aiming to reach his maiden Masters 1000 final after becoming the first American to reach back-to-back Rome Masters semi-finals since Pete Sampras in 1993-94.
Paul does own one win over Sinner, but the Italian is a completely different beast these days. Impossible to back against Sinner, but also tough to find value - I'm tipping the World No. 1 to prevail with Under 21.5 total games.
Head To Head
Sinner leads 3-1. Paul's lone win came on grass at Eastbourne in 2023, while Sinner was a 7-6 7-6 6-1 winner in the US Open R16 in 2024.
Jannik Sinner Form
What more is there to say? Sinner has won 102 of his last 110 matches dating back to October 2023 and comes into this contest on a 25-match winning streak dating back to the Shanghai Masters last year.
Sinner has won his last 16 best-of-three matches in straight sets and taken his last 24 sets against top 10 players. Those sorts of numbers are up there with prime Federer, Djokovic and Nadal.
Obviously Sinner put his three-month suspension to good use - he was still able to practice, while he's clearly hit the gym and beefed up physically.
The World No. 1 has cruised into the Rome semi-finals for the first time, dominating Mariano Navone, Jesper de Jong, Francisco Cerundolo and Casper Ruud.
The 6-0 6-1 beatdown of Ruud was utterly ridiculous, with the Norwegian in great form coming off the Madrid Masters title last week.
Tommy Paul Form
Paul has experienced a fairly quiet season, but he's recaptured his best tennis in Rome, improving his 2025 record to 21-7 this week.
The American was struggling with injury at the beginning of the year, but still managed to battle his way into the Australian Open quarter-finals for the second time in his career.
After some solid but unspectacular results through Indian Wells and Miami, Paul claimed a notable scalp over Joao Fonseca in the opening round of Madrid before running into eventual finalist Jack Draper in the R16.
Rome has turned into one of Paul's unexpected favourite stops on tour - he's now made the semi-finals in back-to-back years, dropping just one set against Tomas Machac and conquering the likes of Roberto Bautista Agut, Alex de Minaur and Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets.
