Stefanos Tsitsipas enters the ATP Washington showdown against defending champion Alex de Minaur with an imposing 12-1 H2H advantage, having won nine of those in straight sets. Despite both players facing inconsistent seasons, Tsitsipas' recent title win in Gstaad after a coaching switch suggests a career resurgence. De Minaur, while ranked in the top 10, has struggled with form and motivation, making Tsitsipas the favorite to continue his dominance. Alex de Minaur vs Stefanos Tsitsipas ATP Washington Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Alex de Minaur is the defending champion in Washington, but has a daunting 1-12 record against Stefanos Tsitsipas, who might just be in a career resurgence after a coaching switch and recent title - I'm backing the Greek to continue his dominance over the Aussie in one of the standout opening round matches on Tuesday.

There's not many more dominant H2Hs on tour at the moment than Tsitsipas winning 12 of his 13 previous meetings with De Minaur. Additionally, nine of those victories have come in straight sets. Stylistically, Tsitsipas just loves this matchup, where his aggressive game is just too much for the Aussie to handle.

Obviously the Greek has been well below his best over the last few years, but there's signs he could be about to turn things around. Indeed, Tsitsipas has finally split with his father as coach, which was all kinds of toxic, linking up with Thomas Perrin from the Mouratoglou Academy after Wimbledon.

The move paid immediate dividends, with Tsitsipas winning the Gstaad title a couple of weeks ago - meaning he's now won at least one ATP title every year since 2018.

De Minaur meanwhile also hasn't been at his best, but has maintained a spot inside the top 10 and even hit a career-high No. 5 in the world, even if his form didn't really warrant it.

Newly married after Wimbledon, de Minaur will be hoping to get back to his best tennis after saving multiple championship points to win last year's Washington title over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

But I just can't ignore this matchup. H2H matters in individual sports like tennis, especially longstanding one like this. With Tsitsipas back in a good place with his tennis, the Greek looks good for another win over the Aussie in the American capital.

De Minaur vs Tsitsipas Head To Head

  • Tsitsipas has won 12 of the 13 meetings, with nine coming in straight sets
  • Tsitsipas has a 2-1 record vs top 10 players in 2026 (4-5 vs top 20)
  • De Minaur has lost five of his last 13 matches vs players outside the top 50
  • Tsitsipas has won four of his last five opening round matches
  • All three of Tsitsipas' matches vs top 10 players in 2026 have finished in straight sets
  • Six of De Minaur's last seven ATP matches have finished in straight sets

De Minaur vs Tsitsipas Head To Head

As already mentioned, Tsitsipas leads 12-1, including winning in straights earlier this year in Miami.

Alex de Minaur Form Analysis

  • 2026 ATP Record: 27-14
  • ATP Washington Record: 9-4
  • Current Ranking: No. 6
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 5 (July 2026)

Although he's hit a career-high ranking of No. 5, it's not been a great year for de Minaur and he's spoken of how he's really struggling with his tennis and motivation after several heartbreaking defeats.

Perhaps tying the knot with Katie Boulter will give de Minaur a new outlook on his tennis after he missed another golden opportunity to go deep at a slam, going down to Flavio Cobolli in straight sets in the R16 of Wimbledon.

De Minaur also crashed out to Jakub Mensik in the third round of Roland Garros, while a defeat in the final of Hertogenbosch to Kamil Majchrzak and quarter-final exit to Brandon Nakashima at Queens were also disappointing.

The 27-year-old will be hoping a return to Washington will spark a return to his best tennis after he pulled off a miraculous title triumph last year, saving multiple championship points against Davidovich Fokina in the final.

Stefanos Tsitsipas Form Analysis

  • 2026 ATP Record: 22-15
  • ATP Washington Record: 6-2
  • Current Ranking: No. 51
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 3 (2021)

For all of his struggles, Tsitsipas has only won five less matches than De Minaur in 2026, so he's maybe not that far from returning to the top of the game than most think.

The Greek has endured a tumultuous coaching relationship with his father for many years now and the pair finally called it a day after a second round loss at Wimbledon to Novak Djokovic.

Now working with Thomas Perrin, Tsitsipas has a new lease on his tennis life, winning his 13th ATP title in Gstaad a couple of weeks ago, showcasing superb fight to win four of his five matches in a deciding set.

Tsitsipas has consistently stepped up against elite players, going 2-1 against top 10 and 4-5 vs the top 20, so it's his motivation in the smaller tournaments against lesser names that's been holding him back.

Tsitsipas is playing in Washington for the first time since making back-to-back semi-finals in 2018-19.
