Fils had been enjoying a very impressive return from a back injury, but suffered another setback in Rome, this time a problem to his hip which ultimately forced him out of Roland Garros. Meanwhile, Jodar has emerged as one of the standout players on tour in 2026, putting together a brilliant 26-11 record and swiftly rising into the world's top 25. The 19-year-old compiled some superb results during the clay and grass swings and will be hoping to continue his outstanding form on hardcourt across the summer.
It should be a cracking contest, but it's a tough match to call given Fils has been sidelined for most of the last couple of months and Jodar is playing his first match since Wimbledon, where he did appear a little burned out after so much tennis.

Fils was sidelined for the better part of eight months with a back injury, but returned to tour with a bang at the start of the year and was looking good to quickly eclipse his career-high ranking of No. 14.
The 22-year-old registered various standout results, including winning the Barcelona title, making the final in Doha and reaching Masters 1000 semi-finals in Madrid and Miami.
However, the Frenchman suffered another setback in Rome when he went down with a hip injury, forcing him out of Roland Garros for the second year running.
Fils returned to action at Wimbledon and had a good win over Raphael Collignon in the opening round before bowing out to Matteo Berrretini in four sets. This will be his first appearance in Washington.

It's been a whirlwind rise for Jodar, who was ranked outside the world's top 500 this time last year.
After impressing at the Next Gen ATP Finals at the end of 2025, Jodar has put together a meteoric climb up the rankings and arrives in Washington nestled inside the top 25.
The 19-year-old won his maiden ATP title in Marrakech and continued his momentum throughout the clay swing, making back-to-back Masters 1000 quarter-finals in Madrid and Rome before a maiden Grand Slam quarter-final showing at Roland Garros.
Jodar looked a little burned out at Wimbledon, but still managed to make the third round on his grass debut before going out to Shintaro Mochizuki. The Spaniard is also playing Washington for the first time, but is used to hardcourt conditions in North America after playing college tennis for the Virginia Cavaliers in 2024-25.
