Alexander Zverev, the top seed, is set to open his Canada Masters journey against Adam Walton. While Zverev seeks rejuvenation and a return to top form after consulting with the Nadals, Walton, despite his recent rise, has yet to beat a top 50 player. Zverev's consistent yet sometimes underwhelming performance in Grand Slams has made this match a crucial test. Walton, fighting to solidify his place in the top 100, faces a tough challenge. The match is expected to be a routine victory for Zverev unless Walton delivers an upset.

It's been more of the same for Zverev throughout 2025 - he's maintained a top three ranking and is generally consistent, but he repeatedly goes into his shell in big matches and he's suffered more Grand Slam heartbreak as a result. After a first round exit at Wimbledon, Zverev spent some time in Mallorca at the Rafa Nadal Academy, where he sought advice and insight from both Nadal and his uncle Toni, who might be joining his coaching team in the future. Clearly Zverev is trying to find that edge and spark to make himself a leading contender at these big events again, so we'll see over the next 10 days the impact both Nadals had there.

Zverev has received a favourable opening match here. Walton has done magnificently to entrench himself in the top 100, but he's simply not a threat to the best players in the world. Indeed, Walton has never beaten a top 50 player in his career, with his highest-ranked victory so far in 2025 coming against the World No. 61. If Zverev even drops a set here, he should be very concerned. Can't see Walton doing enough to make this competitive, so Under 21.5 total games is the main play for this clash.

Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Alexander Zverev Form

Zverev has registered a 35-14 record so far this season, dropping to No. 3 in the world after having a very realistic shot of claiming the No. 1 ranking throughout the opening months of 2025.

However, the German couldn't find his best tennis after losing the Australian Open final in straight sets to Jannik Sinner - and apart from a title triumph in Munich, it's been a very disappointing year, relatively speaking of course.

Indeed, Zverev went down to 37-year-old Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals of Roland Garros and was then stunned by Arthur Rinderknech in the first round of Wimbledon - his earliest exit at a major since 2019.

Speaking of mental health struggles, Zverev linked up with Rafael and Toni Nadal in Mallorca in a bid to rejuvenate himself for the remainder of the year.

Zverev won the second of his seven Masters 1000 titles in Canada back in 2017, where he defeated Roger Federer in the final.

Adam Walton Form

Walton heads into this contest with a 9-12 record at tour-level for the season and four spots off his career-high ranking of No. 84.

It's been an unexpected rise into the top 100 for Walton, who played college tennis in the United States and didn't entirely plan to turn professional until some standout Futures results sort of forced his hand.

The Aussie keeps going from strength to strength and will now be looking to take his game to the next level in order to cement that top 100 status and attempt to rise closer to the top 50.

Walton does need to add something extra to his game if he's going to take that next step - as mentioned, he's never beaten a top 50 player in his career, although he did push Carlos Alcaraz in a long match at Queen's Club earlier this season.

The 26-year-old reached his first ATP semi-final in Los Cabos a couple of weeks ago and got his debut Canada Masters main draw campaign off to a winning start with a 4-6 6-0 6-3 victory over Benjamin Bonzi in the opening round.

Verdict

Walton always fights hard, but he's yet to defeat a top 50 player, so facing the top seed and World No. 3 is probably too big a mountain to climb here.

It should be a routine win for Zverev that goes Under 21.5 total games.
