Taree Tips October 16

Tony Sweeney Memorial Super Maiden Showcase Plate Tips (Race 3)

Taree Next Best Bet - Race 3 No. 7 Rupertano

A promising debut at Taree on September 22 provides a solid platform for Rupertano, who returns to the same circuit for his second race-day appearance in Friday's 1400m Super Maiden.

Prepared by Jason Deamer, the gelding finished runner-up over 1313m on a Soft 5 surface at his first start, suggesting he possesses enough ability to progress quickly through maiden company.

There should be natural improvement to come from that outing, particularly with the benefit of race experience, while the relatively modest rise in distance looks a suitable progression at this stage of his preparation.

Barrier three is another positive in a 14-runner field, giving Shannen Llewellyn the opportunity to secure an economical passage, although the experienced Hellfighter and consistent Areesea are among those capable of providing opposition.

The combination of a promising debut, a favourable draw and a return to familiar surroundings makes Rupertano one of the more appealing runners on Friday's program, with scope for further improvement at just his second start.

Glass 24/7 Class 1 & Maiden Showcase Plate Tips (Race 4)

Taree Favourite - Race 4 No. 12 Purple Haze

A consistent performer who has registered four top-three finishes from her past five starts, Purple Haze looks well placed to make her presence felt in Friday's 1600m Class 1 and Maiden Showcase Plate.

The Angela Davies-trained mare closed out her previous preparation with consecutive placings, including two runner-up finishes, before returning with another second at her first appearance this campaign.

That first-up performance suggests she has returned in encouraging order, and the move to 1600m should give her an opportunity to build on her already consistent profile rather than facing a sharp change in assignment.

Ashley Morgan has the ride from barrier four, providing the mare with a favourable starting position in a race featuring several runners drawn much wider, while her recent form makes her an appealing alternative to those arriving off breakthrough victories.

The main challenge is turning a string of placings into a maiden success, but Purple Haze has an attractive setup second-up and looks capable of figuring prominently with a favourable run in transit.

Taree Kia Lightning Sprint Tips (Race 5)

Taree Feature Bet - Race 5 No. 1 Speck

An excellent recent preparation has Speck well placed for Friday's 1000m Lightning Sprint, with the Rod Northam-trained gelding arriving off a victory following a sequence of consistent performances.

The six-year-old has finished in the first two at four of his past five starts, including three runner-up efforts before breaking through last time, and that level of consistency gives him a strong foundation for another competitive showing.

His recent winning form is particularly encouraging in an open sprint where several rivals have struggled for consistency, although the in-form Grassburn presents an obvious danger after winning two of his past four assignments.

Reece Jones takes the reins from barrier three, giving Speck an opportunity to settle within striking distance of the leaders, with a favourable draw potentially proving important around the Taree circuit.

The biggest challenge is the 61kg impost, which sees Speck concede at least 5kg to his rivals, but his recent form and advantageous barrier make him a leading contender despite that weight disadvantage.

Sky International Taree Gold Cup Tips (Race 7)

Taree Best Bet - Race 7 No. 4 Fierceness

A rapidly improving four-year-old from the Matthew Smith stable, Fierceness arrives at Friday's $100,000 Taree Gold Cup chasing a hat-trick of victories after taking his record to four wins and five placings from 15 career starts.

The son of Fierce Impact has progressed nicely through the Sydney metropolitan grades this preparation, recording a narrow runner-up finish over 1600m at Kembla Grange on August 29 before breaking through in BM72 company at Canterbury on September 16.

That Canterbury success came over 1550m when defeating Cobra Club, and Fierceness subsequently made it consecutive metropolitan victories when stepping back up to 1600m at Warwick Farm on October 5, confirming his progression through the grades.

Three of his four career victories have come on Soft ground, and the gelding has won over distances ranging from 1280m to 1600m, making Friday's conditions and the mile assignment particularly appealing.

Ashley Morgan takes the ride from barrier seven with 56.5kg, and while this represents another rise in class, Fierceness brings winning metropolitan form and considerable upside into a race where several rivals have more exposed profiles.
