Sunshine Coast Tips October 16

Vintage Building Group Class 4 Handicap Tips (Race 1)

Sunshine Coast Best Bet - Race 1 No. 1 Shako

Three of Shako's four career victories have come at the Sunshine Coast, including a narrow success in a similar contest just under a year ago, and the six-year-old looks well placed to add to that record on Friday.

The son of Epaulette has finished in the first four in three of his four appearances this preparation, most recently producing a solid third over this distance at the Sunshine Coast two weeks ago when beaten just a length.

That latest performance came on a Good surface, although the prospect of rain-affected ground presents no concerns for the gelding, who has previously demonstrated his ability to handle varying track conditions.

An inside barrier provides another advantage, while the drop from Class 5 company into a Class 4 Handicap represents a favourable change in grade following his latest effort.

Ben Thompson reunites with the Jack Bruce-trained runner, and with his strong course record, consistent recent form and favourable race conditions, Shako looks capable of recording his first victory of the season.

Sunshine Coast Value Bet - Race 3 No. 14 Dashing Hope

Two encouraging performances this preparation have Dashing Hope well placed to return to winning form, with the Trevor Thomas-trained mare opening her campaign with a runner-up finish over 1000m at Dalby.

The six-year-old backed that effort up with a solid fourth over the same distance at the Gold Coast just under three weeks ago, finishing three-and-a-half lengths from the winner in a similar contest on a Good 4 surface.

A slow getaway did her no favours on that occasion, and after being ridden with restraint, similar tactics could be employed from a wide barrier on Friday.

Dashing Hope has previously won at the Sunshine Coast and is proven on Soft ground, making the expected rain-affected conditions another positive as she returns to a familiar circuit.

The rise in distance is particularly appealing given both career victories have come over this trip, and with fitness now on her side, Dashing Hope looks capable of making her presence felt at an attractive price.

Sunshine Coast Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 11 Snitzstream

Back-to-back victories earlier this preparation highlighted the ability of Snitzstream, who followed an 1100m maiden success at Ipswich with a narrow win over 1200m at the Sunshine Coast.

The daughter of Snitzel raced prominently when recording that latest victory on a Good surface, demonstrating enough early speed to suggest she can overcome a less-than-ideal draw on Friday.

A subsequent rise to 1350m at Doomben saw the mare ridden with more restraint, and that performance is worth forgiving given the change in tactics and stronger metropolitan opposition.

The forecast rain-affected conditions should pose no problems for Snitzstream, whose maiden breakthrough at Ipswich came on Soft ground, while the return to provincial company represents a significant drop in grade.

Stuart and Bayley Kendrick's mare has already demonstrated her effectiveness at this circuit, and with the distance expected to suit, Snitzstream looks well placed to record her second Sunshine Coast victory despite drawing barrier nine.

Sunshine Coast Roughie - Race 8 No. 10 Fastest Choice

Both previous appearances on rain-affected ground have produced creditable performances from Fastest Choice, including a fifth-place finish over 1500m at Goulburn in July when beaten just over two-and-a-half lengths.

The daughter of Trapeze Artist was subsequently spelled before returning to racing at the Sunshine Coast last month, finishing sixth over 1400m on Good ground when beaten two-and-a-half lengths after racing prominently.

A subsequent rise to 1800m saw the mare take up the running before weakening in the home straight, suggesting the longer distance may have stretched her stamina at this stage of her preparation.

The drop back in distance looks a positive for the Stephen Sutherland-trained mare, while barrier five should allow her to secure a favourable position and the return to rain-affected ground is another factor in her favour.

Brandon Lerena returns to the saddle, and with the distance, draw and expected conditions looking more suitable than those encountered recently, Fastest Choice could prove capable of breaking her maiden at the sixth attempt.
