Launceston Tips October 16

Mayhem In The Mounting Yard Nov 20, Book Online Maiden Tips (Race 2)

Launceston Value Bet - Race 2 No. 10 Nine Choirs

Three trial appearances preceded the race-day debut of Nine Choirs, with the most recent of those producing a fourth-place finish at Longford before the Stuart Gandy-trained mare made an encouraging start to her career at Launceston two weeks ago.

Sent around at $41 over 1100m, the four-year-old came close to causing an upset when finishing strongly from barrier three to claim third in a 10-runner maiden, beaten less than a length.

That performance suggested the daughter of Alpine Eagle would benefit from the experience, particularly after settling back in the field and making good ground late, with natural improvement expected at her second appearance.

The rise in distance looks another positive, and while Nine Choirs has shown she can handle rain-affected conditions, a possible track upgrade should pose no problems given the promise of her debut performance.

Christopher Pang retains the ride after partnering the mare first-up, and although a wide barrier presents another challenge, similar patient tactics could allow Nine Choirs to finish strongly again and prove capable of breaking through.

Launceston Roughie - Race 3 No. 11 Trotsky

A previous winner over the track and distance, Trotsky returns to familiar surroundings on Friday night after breaking his maiden at Launceston in October last year and producing several useful performances in defeat since.

The seven-year-old resumed here three weeks ago with a fifth-place finish in a Class 1 Handicap on Good ground, beaten just over two lengths in an encouraging return that should provide a solid fitness foundation.

While that race has yet to produce a subsequent winner, the first, third and fourth placegetters have all performed well in defeat since, suggesting the form has some substance heading into Friday's assignment.

The rise in distance should suit Trotsky, who has already demonstrated his effectiveness under these conditions, while any rain that leaves the track in the Soft range would be another positive despite his ability to handle Good ground.

A wide barrier is the main concern, although it should be manageable in this field, and with Hayley McCarthy retaining the ride, Trotsky shapes as a value chance to return to winning form.

Launceston Next Best Bet - Race 5 No. 6 Go Jeanie

Four top-three finishes from five appearances highlighted the consistency of Go Jeanie last preparation, with her only unplaced effort coming when tackling the Group 3 Mystic Journey Stakes at Hobart in February at big odds.

The Glenn Stevenson-trained mare returned to racing at Launceston two weeks ago, finishing fifth over 1200m and beaten less than two-and-a-half lengths in a performance that was better than the bare result suggests.

Ridden with restraint, the daughter of Frosted finished strongly from off the pace in a race dominated by those positioned closer to the speed, making her effort particularly encouraging with further improvement expected second-up.

The booking of Erica Byrne Burke catches the eye, while an inside barrier should allow the five-year-old to settle closer to the action and enjoy a more economical passage than she received on her return.

Go Jeanie also gets in with an attractive racing weight, and with her first-up performance providing a solid platform for improvement, she looks well placed to record her second victory at Launceston.

Launceston Best Bet - Race 7 No. 3 Prince Of Khatun

Prince Of Khatun made an immediate impact on his return to racing at Launceston two weeks ago, recording his first victory at the venue when successful over 1200m in BM68 company.

The Adam Trinder-trained gelding justified $1.95 favouritism when finishing just under half a length clear of his nearest rival, with the Soft 5 conditions playing to his strengths in an encouraging first-up performance.

Although the prospect of a drying track presents no concerns, Prince Of Khatun has also produced several strong efforts on Good ground, including three runner-up finishes, giving him a versatile profile across different surfaces.

The son of Stratosphere has demonstrated tactical versatility throughout his career, and while a wide barrier could complicate matters, his ability to race in different positions should give connections options in running.

Erica Byrne Burke has established an excellent record riding for Adam Trinder at Launceston in 2026, combining for 13 winners from 50 rides at a 26% strike rate, and their representative looks capable of making it consecutive victories second-up.
