Sydney Sixers are set to face Hobart Hurricanes in a crucial Big Bash League encounter, with the return of Steve Smith expected to bolster the Sixers' chances. Following Smith's successful Ashes series, his presence in the squad brings optimism for a strong performance, especially as the Sixers aim to secure a spot in the finals. With Smith likely to exceed his 29.5 run total, and Ben Dwarshuis poised to take multiple wickets, the Sixers are tipped to break their winless streak at the SCG. Hobart, resting key player Nathan Ellis, might struggle against an invigorated Sixers lineup.

Sydney Sixers vs Hobart Hurricanes Big Bash League Expert Tips

Steve Smith’s return to the Big Bash will help the Sixers to overcome the competition leading Hurricanes in Sunday afternoon’s heavyweight clash at the SCG.

Smith had a stellar Ashes series with Australia and now returns to the BBL with his team needing at least a couple more wins to secure themselves a finals spot. Last season he managed just 3 games and 2 innings with the bat but scored 121 not out and 52, hitting 12 fours and 11 sixes in his two outings.

With Hobart resting Nathan Ellis after his man of the match performance against the Strikers, the bowling attack will need to be on it’s A game to even have a chance against the Sixers.

Sydney are yet to win a game this season at the SCG but expect that trend to be broken on Sunday as they are led by Smith to a tight victory over the defending champions.

Take Sydney to cover the -2.5 wicket/-3.5 run line, Steve Smith to hit over his 29.5 run total and why not take a chance on 50 from the Ashes Champion. Ben Dwarshuis to have 2+ wickets is also a good shout.

  • Sydney have won 3 of the last 5 matches against Hobart.
  • Steve Smith hit scores of 121 not out and 52 in his two BBL innings last season.
  • Steve Smith has averaged 30+ in 6 straight BBL seasons.
  • Ben Dwarshuis (Sydney Sixers) has taken eight wickets at an average of 10.6 across his past three BBL bowling innings; he logged figures of 2-36 when he last faced the Hobart Hurricanes in last season's Qualifier final.

Sydney Sixers Form

The Sixers tightened up the standings on Thursday with a solid 6 wicket victory over the Melbourne Stars with 17 balls remaining. They are now tied with Melbourne and Perth on 8 pts from 7 games played with a 4-3 record.

Sydney’s bowling attack had to wait until the 6th over to get their first wicket while 4 of the top 5 Stars batsmen all scored 20+. But the rest of the batting order dropped like flies. 6 wickets with a combined total of 9 runs, Ben Dwarshuis taking 4 for 13 in an amazing 4 over spell. Jack Edwards also took 3 wickets for 27 runs.

With a low total to chase, the Sixers were rightfully confident coming out to bat but Babar Azam once again failed to reach 15 runs with Moises Henriques also going for 12. Josh Philippe was once again the saviour posting a game high 35 runs to steer his team to victory.

Hobart Hurricanes Form

Hobart remain the outright leaders of BBL15 as they continue to set the bar high in their title defence. Their most recent win came by 37 runs against Adelaide, Mitch Owen blasting 33 runs off 9 balls before mistiming a shot and being caught out. No other batsman shone as bright and the 178 run total looked dangerous.

But the bowling attack was once again the saviour, striking already in the 2nd over and keeping all but 2 batters to single digits. Rishad Hossain taking 3 wickets off his 4 overs and giving up just 26 runs.

The Hurricanes are blasting an average of 14.2 fours per game which drops slightly to 11.8 in games on the road but their totals are consistently going over 330.
