Bangladesh vs Australia, 3rd ODI 2026 - Expert Prediction

The series is gone and the touring party is in trouble. But a dead rubber on foreign soil is exactly the kind of game where a side with nothing to lose can play with some freedom and that is the angle here.

Australia's campaign across both tours has been undermined by the same problems. The top order has collapsed repeatedly and the batting has lacked the depth to recover. In the second ODI, Taskin and Mustafizur removed the first three wickets before Australia had scored a run, becoming just the fourth team in ODI history to be 0-3. The collapses have been extraordinary and the series was lost before it really began.

Something has to give for Game 3. The selection conversation that was brewing during the Pakistan tour with Labuschagne under pressure and young players waiting for opportunities, is now unavoidable. Cooper Connolly is central to Australia's batting future and with the series pressure removed, this is the game to back him to find some form. He made 35 in the first ODI opening the batting before Mosaddek removed him, and was bowled by Abrar Ahmed for a low score in the final Pakistan ODI. The talent is obvious. A dead rubber in Mirpur is exactly where a young batter rediscovers his touch.

Matt Short is also due. Three consecutive ducks, ending the Pakistan series and carrying into both Bangladesh games is not what we expect from this gun batter. The surface in Mirpur has offered pace bowlers more than the Pakistan pitches did, which actually suits Australia's attack. Nathan Ellis has been the standout performer across this entire tour and on a pitch with something in it for the quicks, he is a strong wicket-taking option again.

Take Australia to win as well as Cooper Connolly over 20.5 runs and Nathan Ellis 2+ wickets. The surface has shown it has something for the quicks throughout this series.

  • Nathan Ellis has been Australia's best bowler across both tours, taking wickets in every match, and the Mirpur surface produced pace and bounce for Nahid Rana in Game 1 which bodes well for his 2+ wicket line.
  • Cooper Connolly made 35 off 50 balls opening in the first ODI before being removed by a sharp turning delivery, the talent is clear and a dead rubber is the right game to back him to cross 20.5 runs.
  • Bangladesh have won the series and may approach this match with less intensity, while Australia have the freedom of a side with nothing to lose which has historically produced improved performances in dead rubbers.
  • Australia have made it 187 and 191 in difficult conditions in this series, on a day when the top order fires even slightly, they have enough in the batting lineup to post a competitive total.

Head to Head

Bangladesh won the first ODI by 86 runs via DLS and the second by five wickets to claim the series, their first ODI series victory over Australia. It is only the second time Bangladesh have defeated Australia in this format since the Cardiff Miracle in 2005. The third ODI is a dead rubber at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur with Australia looking to salvage some pride from a difficult tour.

Bangladesh Form Analysis

Bangladesh have been exceptional across both games. Mosaddek Hossain's return after four years produced an all-round performance in Game 1 with a career-best 86 not out off 70 balls and two wickets. Nahid Rana's 4-41 with the pace to match was the difference with the ball. In Game 2, Taskin and Mustafizur removed three Australian wickets before a run was scored, setting a tone Bangladesh never relinquished.

Towhid Hridoy's unbeaten 40 and Mehidy's composed finishing knocked off the target with ease. Bangladesh bowled and batted with the confidence of a side completely in control of their conditions. Having won the series, they are likely to rotate or rest some key players for Game 3.

Australia Form Analysis

The tour has been a difficult one. In Game 1, four dropped catches in the field cost Australia significantly before Rana's spell ended the chase at 191. In Game 2 the top order was even worse, 0-3 inside two overs, 25-4 inside the powerplay. Labuschagne and Bartlett's 103-run seventh-wicket stand was genuinely impressive but came far too late to matter.

Matt Short has now made 0, 0 and 0 across his last three ODI innings. Changes are coming and they should come. Liam Scott, who debuted in Game 1, and other fringe players will likely get another opportunity. The management will want to see what they have across the full squad before the white-ball calendar gets even more demanding with Zimbabwe and South Africa to come.

Verdict

Take Australia to win as well as Cooper Connolly over 20.5 runs and Nathan Ellis 2+ wickets. The surface has shown it has something for the quicks throughout this series.
