Iga Swiatek continues her bid for a first Wuhan Open title on her debut appearance when she meets Jasmine Paolini in the quarter-finals on Friday night.

Swiatek has enjoyed a resurgent last few months, rising back to World No. 2 and capturing three titles - and she's now looking to add another WTA 1000 title to her collection in Wuhan. Paolini meanwhile has equalled her career-best season in terms of match wins with 40 and she's aiming for a big finish in order to qualify for the WTA Finals (currently in ninth spot).

Unfortunately for Paolini, she's running into her nemesis in Wuhan. The diminutive Italian has never beaten Swiatek in six previous attempts, taking just one set in the process. Quite simply, this is a horror matchup for Paolini - she just doesn't have the power and weight of shot to force Swiatek into uncomfortable positions. Backing Swiatek in for another straight sets victory and the Wuhan semis.

Swiatek leads 6-0. They've met twice so far in 2025, with Swiatek winning 6-1 6-3 in the Bad Homburg semi-finals before a 7-5 6-4 victory in the Cincinnati final.

Swiatek has put together a 61-14 record on the season, recovering from a 12-month period without winning a title to get back to some of her best tennis.

The Pole's resurgence happened on the unlikely surface of grass - after reaching the final of Bad Homburg, Swiatek surged to her maiden Wimbledon title and sixth Grand Slam trophy, crushing Amanda Anisimova 6-0 6-0 in the final.

It's been a solid stretch since for Swiatek - she's picked up two more titles in Cincinnati and Seoul, along with reaching the US Open quarter-finals.

Swiatek suffered a minor setback with a quarter-final loss to Emma Navarro in Beijing last week, but has bounced back in Wuhan, beating Marie Bouzkova 6-1 6-1 before taking out Belinda Bencic 7-6 6-4.

Jasmine Paolini Form

Paolini has racked up 40 match wins for the second straight year, successfully backing up her breakout season of 2024, where she made Grand Slam finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

The Italian hasn't quite been able to make the same impact at the slams in 2025, but she's been prolific at WTA 1000 level, reaching at least the semi-finals on three occasions - including winning the title in Rome and finishing runner-up in Cincinnati.

Those results have contributed to Paolini maintaining a top five ranking, while she comes into this contest in good form having won eight of her last nine matches.

Paolini led Italy to another Billie Jean Cup title before reaching the quarter-finals of Beijing, where it took eventual champion Amanda Anisimova to stop her. The 29-year-old has been forced to come from a set down in both of her Wuhan matches to make the quarter-finals, outlasting Yue Yuan before Clara Tauson retired in the decider in their R16 clash.
