Novak Djokovic returns for his third tournament of the 2026 season at the Rome Masters, facing promising Croatian Dino Prizmic in the second round. Djokovic, still working into top form after an injury, knows clay openers are always tough and faces a player with 17 wins from 22 matches on the surface this year. Prizmic has proven himself against top-10 opponents and recently defeated Ben Shelton in Madrid. While Djokovic is favored, experts expect a long, closely fought match, predicting over 21.5 games and Djokovic to win in three sets.

Novak Djokovic vs Dino Prizmic Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Novak Djokovic lines up for just his third tournament of the season when he confronts the rising Dino Prizmic in the Rome Masters second round on Friday.

Obviously restricted to a limited schedule as he manages his body and attempts to peak for the majors, Djokovic returns to action for the first time since Indian Wells and for his debut on clay in Rome - and it's not an easy opener for the six-time champion.

Prizmic has won 17 of his 22 matches on clay this year and after some injuries, has found his feet on the main tour and I wouldn't be surprised to see him inside the top 30 by the end of the year. The 20-year-old has taken at least a set in all three previous meetings with top 10 players and beat Ben Shelton on his way to the third round in Madrid last week.

The Croatian also made a name for himself as an 18-year-old when he qualified for the Australian Open in 2024 and took a set off Djokovic in the opening round of the main draw, showcasing his immense talent.

Even for Djokovic, first matches on clay are always tricky - he lost opening matches to the likes of Alejandro Tabilo and Matteo Arnaldi last year. Prizmic is most certainly of that calibre right now - maybe even better. I think this is a long match that goes Over 21.5 games. I'll tentatively side with Djokovic in three, but Prizmic registering the upset wouldn't be surprising in the slightest, but odds of $4.00 for the Serbian will do me.
  • Prizmic has won 17 of his last 22 matches on clay
  • Prizmic is 1-2 vs top 10 players, taking at least a set in all three
  • Djokovic has a 68-12 record in Rome
  • Djokovic has lost two of his last three clay opening matches
  • Djokovic has dropped at least one set in his last six matches

Novak Djokovic Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 7-2
  • ATP Rome Record: 68-12
  • Current Ranking: No. 4
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 1 (2011)

Djokovic is playing just his third tournament of 2026 as he looks to gain some much-needed match practice ahead of the French Open.

The Serbian was outstanding at the Australian Open as he upset Jannik Sinner in a memorable semi-final before going down to Carlos Alcaraz in four.

The 38-year-old returned to action at Indian Wells, but it wasn't as convincing, with Djokovic dropping sets to Kamil Majchrzak and Aleksandar Kovacevic before going down to an injured Jack Draper.

Opting to bypass Monte Carlo and Madrid, Djokovic doesn't sound too optmistic about his chances in Rome.

“I am ready enough to compete,” Djokovic told reporters. “I am not the happiest with the level of tennis or the movement or the physical state, but it is getting there. I wanted to be back on the Tour earlier, but couldn’t. I was injured, so I had to deal with it progressively. I am here in Rome. I always love coming back, have had great success, so I am excited to be back in competition.”

Dino Prizmic Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 8-6
  • ATP Rome Record: 1-0
  • Current Ranking: No. 79
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 79 (May 2026)

Currently at a career-high ranking, Prizmic has been a player to watch across the clay swing and the youngster now gets another chance to test himself against elite opposition.

Prizmic endured a fair share of injury problems after first troubling Djokovic as an 18-year-old at the Australian Open two years ago, but he's making up for lost time.

The 20-year-old made the final of the Monza Challenger before qualifying for the Madrid main draw and earning his first top 10 scalp over Ben Shelton. Tomas Martin Etcheverry proved too strong in the third round, but it was a great tournament for Prizmic.

The Croatian has now qualified for Rome without dropping a set, beating wildcard Federico Bondioli 6-2 6-4 in his opening round of the main draw.
