Casper Ruud and Luciano Darderi face off in the Rome Masters semi-finals, with Ruud looking to reach his fourth Masters 1000 final and Darderi making a breakout run at this level. Darderi has battled through several tough three-set matches but may struggle with fatigue. Ruud, meanwhile, enters fresher, having lost just one set all tournament and thriving on the Rome clay where he has extensive experience. The recommendation: Ruud to win in straight sets, ending Darderi’s fairytale run.

Luciano Darderi vs Casper Ruud Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

It's a huge opportunity for both players as Italian home favourite Luciano Darderi and Casper Ruud square off for a place in the Rome Masters final on Friday.

It's a timely run for Ruud, who had just fallen outside of the world's top 20 after failing to defend his Madrid title. Ruud has experienced a relatively quiet season, but he's hit peak form in Rome and looks strongly positioned to reach a fourth Masters 1000 final after dropping just one set across his five matches.

Meanwhile, Darderi has broken through at Masters 1000 level for the first time to make a maiden semi-final, registering back-to-back-to-back three-set victories over Tommy Paul, Alexander Zverev and Rafael Jodar - the latter of which finished after 2am local time.

Very impressive run for Darderi, but he's got be feeling a bit heavy in the legs after some gruelling encounters and late nights. Ruud meanwhile is fresh as a daisy and has ample experience at this stage of a Masters. It would be a fairytale if Darderi continued his run into a first Masters final, but I think Ruud grinds him into submission in straight sets.
  • Eight of Ruud's last nine wins have come in straight sets
  • Ruud has only dropped more than four games in a set once this tournament
  • Ruud has won 10 of his last 14 semi-finals (three defeats vs top four)
  • Darderi is 7-21 lifetime vs top 25 players
  • Darderi is playing his first Masters 1000 semi-final, Ruud is featuring in his 10th

Luciano Darderi Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 18-10
  • ATP Rome Record: 7-2
  • Current Ranking: No. 20
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 18 (March 2026)

Darderi has translated a strong start to the season into a genuine breakthrough, climbing into the top 20 for the first time in his career.

He made an early statement with a quarter-final run in Auckland before reaching the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time at the Australian Open. His form then peaked during the South American clay swing, where he finished runner-up in Buenos Aires and followed it up by lifting the title in Santiago.

While he maintained a solid level with a semi-final appearance in Marrakech, his transition to Masters 1000 events was underwhelming - early exits in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo, along with a second-round loss in Madrid, suggested he was struggling to translate that form to the highest tier.

That narrative has been completely flipped in Rome. Playing in front of a home crowd, Darderi has surged to his first Masters-level semi-final, producing standout comeback wins over Tommy Paul and Alexander Zverev to underline his arrival on the big stage.

Darderi then kept his composure in a late-night epic against teenage star Rafael Jodar, recovering from the disappointment of wasting multiple match points in the second set to drop a bagel in the decider - the second straight match he's finished with a 6-0 set.

"I think it's the best win of my career because of the crowd and everything here in Rome. First time in the semi-finals, it's a dream to play here," Darderi said. "Rafa is an amazing player. He's so young, just 19 years old. I had my chance in the second set, then he played just amazing. But I kept fighting and I am very happy about that."

Casper Ruud Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 16-9
  • ATP Rome Record: 20-6
  • Current Ranking: No. 25
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 2 (2022)

It was a subdued start to the season for Ruud, with limited impact across the opening months. He reached just one quarter-final in that stretch - at Delray Beach - and even that run required only a single match win, highlighting the lack of rhythm early in the year.

There were clear factors behind that slow build. The arrival of his first child understandably shifted priorities, while a physical setback in Monte Carlo forced a retirement and further disrupted momentum.

Since then, Ruud has steadily worked his way back into form. A quarter-final run in Madrid signalled improvement, and he has backed that up with another deep run in Rome.

More telling than the results has been the authority of his performances. He opened with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 win over Zachary Svajda, followed by a composed 6-3, 6-4 victory against the in-form Jiri Lehecka. That level lifted again in the next round, where Ruud dismantled home favourite Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals for the fifth time in Rome.

Ruud dropped his first set of the tournament against Karen Khachanov, but that can be put down to the rain delay that disrupted his momentum - he quickly regained focus to complete a dominant 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 victory.

"I was happy with the win," Ruud said post-match. "A little down period in the second after the rain, but I am proud of the first and third sets. The quality I played with in the first and third sets is some of the best I have felt on court recently."

Fantastic run for Darderi, but I think it ends here - taking Ruud to prevail in straights.
