Alexander Zverev vs Daniel Altmaier Tips, Prediction & Live Stream - Altmaier can cover big line in Rome

Second seed Alexander Zverev opens his Rome Masters campaign against fellow German Daniel Altmaier, a formidable opponent on clay with notable upsets against top players. Despite Zverev's consistent clay-court openers, he's been vulnerable, dropping sets in previous first rounds this year. Altmaier enters with improved form, especially on clay, and is tipped to cover a +5.5 handicap. However, Zverev’s experience and record in Rome make him the favorite to progress after a likely hard-fought encounter. Expect Zverev to advance, but Altmaier should make it competitive.

Alexander Zverev vs Daniel Altmaier Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Second seed Alexander Zverev begins his bid for a third Rome Masters title when he squares off against countryman Daniel Altmaier in the second round on Friday.

Zverev has produced some great tennis in Rome throughout his career, but it goes without saying he almost certainly needs Jannik Sinner to either suffer a huge upset or withdraw if he is going to add to his pair of titles over the next 10 days. Zverev has lost to Sinner in all four Masters 1000 tournaments this year and if the pair do meet again in the final, that number will most likely increase again.

But, before Zverev can think about another Sinner beatdown, he has to get there - and Altmaier is a pretty tough opening opponent.

Altmaier is sneaky good on clay - he's got a 4-4 record vs top 10 players on the surface and defeated Sinner at the 2023 French Open. The man knows his stuff on the dirt and has rounded into a bit of form after a horror start to the season.

Zverev has a ridiculously consistent record in clay openers over the years, but he's dropped a set in all three of his first rounds on the surface so far this year. Give me Altamier with a huge +5.5 start and Zverev to prevail in three at big odds.
  • Zverev has won 23 of his last 24 opening matches on clay
  • Zverev has dropped a set in his last three clay opening matches
  • Altmaier has a 4-4 record vs top 10 players on clay
  • Altmaier has covered a +5.5 line in his last seven matches at all levels

Zverev vs Altmaier Head To Head

Zverev leads 3-1 - Altmaier has pushed his countryman in the majority of matches and sets, including winning in Acapulco a couple of years ago.

Alexander Zverev Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 26-8
  • ATP Rome Record: 27-7
  • Current Ranking: No. 3
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 2 (2022)

I feel like I'm always on repeat when discussing Zverev, but it really just is more of the same when it comes to the World No. 3.

Zverev continues to go deep at the biggest tournaments, but he just doesn't have the level required to beat the Big 2.

Carlos Alcaraz outlasted Zverev in five sets in the Australian Open semi-finals, while Sinner has toppled him in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo and Madrid.

It's also been over a year now since Zverev last picked up a title - that came in Munich 2025, with the German going down to Flavio Cobolli in the semi-finals of that title defence.

Zverev is a two-time champion in Rome, but was knocked out in the quarter-finals by Lorenzo Musetti last year.

Daniel Altmaier Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 4-12
  • ATP Rome Record: 2-3
  • Current Ranking: No. 64
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 44 (Jan 2026)

It was a nightmare start to the season for Altmaier - he went 0-8, with all eight defeats coming in straight sets, including a couple of bagels thrown in for good measure.

However, since transitioning to clay, Altmaier has experienced an upturn in form, registering an 8-5 record on the surface at all levels.

Altmaier made the final of the Neapol Challenger and quarter-finals of the 250 in Bucharest, but was no match for Juan Manuel Cerundolo in his Madrid opener.

The German has cleared the opening hurdle in Rome, outlasting Zhizhen Zhang in three sets, 4-6 7-6(3) 6-4.
