Lorenzo Musetti has a tough test to claim a first win since the French Open when he meets the resurgent Cameron Norrie in the second round of the Citi DC Open in Washington on Tuesday.

Musetti was forced to retire in the French Open semi-finals against Carlos Alcaraz due to a left leg adductor injury and didn't play a warm-up event on grass, ultimately suffering an opening round exit at Wimbledon. It remains to be seen if Musetti will be operating at full fitness in Washington, but regardless, this is a very tough opening matchup for the World No. 7.

Norrie has been in great form over the last couple of months and heads into this contest having won 13 of his last 18 matches at all levels - including a quarter-final run at Wimbledon. The Brit also has the added advantage of enjoying some match practice in Washington, winning his opening round over Billy Harris in straight sets, while Musetti had a bye as one of the top four seeds. Norrie has everything going in his favour here and I'm backing him to pull off the upset.

Head To Head

Musetti leads 2-0, but both matches came on clay. The Italian was a 3-6 6-4 6-1 winner in the R16 of Barcelona in 2023 before registering a 6-1 6-2 6-4 beatdown in the R32 of Roland Garros later that year.

It's been a brilliant season for Musetti, who comes into this clash with a 25-9 record and at No. 7 in the world.

Musetti shot up the rankings during the clay swing, reaching the Monte Carlo Masters final, along with semi-finals in Madrid and Rome before also advancing to the semis of Roland Garros.

However, things have taken a turn for the worse, with Musetti suffering a leg injury in that semi-final with Alcaraz in Paris, causing him to skip the Wimbledon warm-up events before going down in four sets to Nikoloz Basilashvili in the opening round.

Musetti returns to action this week in Washington, where he will be making his tournament debut.

Cameron Norrie Form

Norrie has registered a 21-16 record at tour-level this season and is making his way back up the rankings at a current mark of No. 41 after reaching his career-high of No. 8 back in 2022.

It had been a tough season for Norrie up until Geneva, where he qualified for the main draw before beating Tomas Machac and Alexei Popyrin, along with taking a set off Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.

Norrie backed it up with an impressive run to the French Open fourth round, beating Daniil Medvedev before once again going down to Djokovic.

The 29-year-old suffered disappointing opening round exits at Queen's Club and Eastbourne, but more than made up for it with a quarter-final finish at Wimbledon, where he went down to Alcaraz.

Norrie is making his second appearance in Washington after a R16 showing in 2021, beating Billy Harris 6-3 7-6 in the opening round.

Lorenzo Musetti v Cameron Norrie

Musetti hasn't tasted victory since Roland Garros and there's question marks over his fitness in his first hardcourt match since March.

Norrie meanwhile has won five of his last six matches, including an opening round win in Washington already. The Brit is playing good enough to cause the upset here.
