Hawkesbury hosts a competitive eight-race provincial meeting on Thursday, with several progressive gallopers looking well placed to improve on recent performances.

The program features a strong mix of maidens and benchmark handicaps, while the expected rain-affected conditions could play a significant role throughout the day.

Hawkesbury Tips July 2

Family Funday 19 July 2YO Maiden Tips (Race 1)

Hawkesbury Next Best Bet - Race 1 No. 5 Essay

Following a promising trial in a strong Warwick Farm heat on January 22, connections thought enough of Essay to debut her in the Listed Lonhro Plate at Randwick on February 7.

Although the filly failed to make an impression there, there were excuses, with the daughter of Zousain pulling up lame and subsequently heading for a spell.

The Richard Collett-trained youngster resumes in a Provincial Maiden after two encouraging June trials.

The first of those came at Hawkesbury, where she was narrowly beaten under a hold, before catching the eye when taking out a 900m Rosehill heat on June 19.

Aside from the race-day appearance, her trial work has been encouraging on rain-affected tracks, and while she's drawn wide, Essay doesn't possess a great deal of tactical speed anyway.

Steriline Super Maiden Plate Tips (Race 4)

Hawkesbury Best Bet - Race 4 No. 13 Saloon Passage

She's been completely unsuited in both winter appearances, including the June 3 resumption at Warwick Farm when settling back in a slowly run, on-speed-favoured race.

Saloon Passage still produced the fastest final 600m, 400m and 200m of the entire program that day.

The rise in distance suited second-up at Canterbury, although another wide draw saw her settle back in a race dominated by the leader, with the filly recording the fastest final 800m, 600m and 400m.

There's more tactical flexibility from a kinder draw this time around.

She also brings strong form from her first preparation, including a debut second to Aisle Two, who subsequently defeated Soverato, while Saloon Passage also wasn't far behind dual Group 3 winner Matias when third at Canterbury.

Noelene Turner Memorial Class 1 Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Hawkesbury Value Bet - Race 5 No. 1 Melanite

The three-year-old was disappointing third-up when ending his summer campaign at Canterbury, although there were excuses after a slow recovery was detected post-race.

Melanite arrives off a nice Randwick trial on June 12, where he worked to the line under a decent hold with Alysha Collett, who stays aboard on race day.

His two best performances have both come when fresh on rain-affected ground.

The first was a fast-finishing second as a well-backed favourite on debut at Hawkesbury last winter.

His previous first-up attempt resulted in victory in the Magic Millions Maiden on January 17, where he was again well supported.

Brad Widdup Racing Provincial Class 1 Tips (Race 6)

Hawkesbury Roughie - Race 6 No. 5 Yes Siree

Yes Siree was well held despite market support when resuming on June 7, although he settled back and was completely unsuited by the race shape.

That performance also suggested the Claire Lever-trained galloper was looking for further than 1000m, with the step to 1400m a positive.

He also returns to his home circuit after missing an intended run at Wyong last Thursday when that meeting was abandoned.

While he hasn't built on a stylish debut victory in May last year, Yes Siree remains lightly raced for a rising five-year-old with only seven starts to his name.

On a worn and rain-affected surface later in the meeting, the middle and wider lanes could prove advantageous under Mitchell Bell.
