In one of the more surprising H2Hs over the last couple of years, Thompson enjoys an unblemished 4-0 record over the big-serving Mpetshi Perricard coming into this contest, incredibly not dropping a set in any of those victories.
Normally you'd follow the trend with betting here, but I'm keen to go in the opposite direction. I have a tentative rule in Mpetshi Perricard matches to always back the underdog, as most matches involving the Frenchman are 50-50 due to his enormous serve. Thompson has also been struggling with injuries all season, especially after Monte Carlo, where he's since withdrawn from Barcelona and Madrid.
When these two played in Miami earlier this season, it was Thompson who prevailed in two tiebreaks - there's good value on an opening set tiebreak here, while it's about time Mpetshi Perricard turned the tables in this matchup.

As mentioned, Thompson leads 4-0 and 8-0 in sets. Their last meeting came at Monte Carlo earlier this clay swing, with the Aussie coming out on top by a 6-4 6-3 score.

It's been a difficult season for Thompson, who was determined to back up and improve from a career-best year in 2024.
However, things haven't gone according to plan for Thompson, mostly due to injuries - the first of which he picked up after making the Brisbane quarter-finals at the start of the year.
Thompson missed the better part of two months after the Australian Open and has only won three matches since January.
The 31-year-old, who won his maiden ATP title and cracked the top 30 for the first time last year, has pulled out of his last two scheduled tournaments in Barcelona and Madrid, while he has never played his best tennis on this surface, losing four of his five matches on European clay in 2024.
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard Form
It's also been a tough season for Mpetshi Perricard, who like Thompson, is trying to defend back up his breakout 2024 campaign.
The 21-year-old started the season in strong fashion, beating the likes of Jakub Mensik and Frances Tiafoe to reach the Brisbane semi-finals.
However, Mpetshi Perricard has only won one completed match outside of Davis Cup for the rest of the season, coming into this encounter on a five-match losing streak - including a 4-6 4-6 loss to Mariano Navone in his last outing at Madrid.
It's not as if Mpetshi Perricard can't play on clay - his booming serve is effective on all surfaces and he won his maiden ATP title on the clay of Lyon last year.

I like to side with the underdog in Mpetshi Perricard matches and with Thompson under an injury cloud, I'm backing the Frenchman to get his first win in this matchup.
