Popyrin has been struggling considerably since last year's Canada Masters and comes into Indian Wells with just two wins from his last 14 matches at all levels. The Aussie is down on confidence and his poor record in the Californian desert doesn't spark much hope here.

Brooksby on the other hand appears on an upward trend - the American played well in his last tournament in Dubai to make the quarter-finals and has a strong 6-3 record at Indian Wells, where it has taken top 15 players to eliminate him in three previous appearances.

This looks like a horror matchup for Popyrin. He's struggling for form and confidence and now he comes up against the unorthodox game style of Brooksby - no two shots are the same and he won't give the Aussie any rhythm. He also enjoys the slower conditions in the desert. I'm taking Brooksby in straights.

It was a slow start to the season for Brooksby, but he did receive some tough draws.

Indeed, the American went out in the second round of Auckland to eventual runner-up Sebastian Baez before drawing 10th seed Alexander Bublik in the first round of the Australian Open.

Brooksby then came up against Tommy Paul and Jiri Lehecka in the first round of Dallas and Doha respectively.

The 25-year-old caught a break in Dubai where he beat Zizou Bergs in the opening round before registering his best win of the year over Karen Khachanov.

Brooksby has made the R16 and third round in his last two Indian Wells appearances.

It's a miracle Popyrin is somehow still ranked inside the top 50 considering he's won two matches since August 25.

Popyrin lost in the opening round of Brisbane, Adelaide and the Australian Open before crashing out in the first round of the Manama Challenger to the World No. 142.

That was a new low point for Popyrin and he proceeded to lose in the first round of Rotterdam before finally getting on the board in Doha - but that win came over an unranked local wildcard.

Popyrin did get a first 'real' victory in his last tournament in Doha over Kamil Majchrzak, edging the Pole 7-5 in the deciding set, but was no match for Jakub Mensik in the following round, losing 6-3 6-2.
