Denis Shapovalov and Stefanos Tsitsipas face off at the Indian Wells Masters in a first-round clash, both struggling to find form. Shapovalov holds a 4-2 head-to-head advantage, excelling on hardcourts, defeating Tsitsipas in all prior encounters on this surface. Despite Tsitsipas' higher seasonal win count, Shapovalov's recent performance at Dallas and hardcourt record provide him a slight edge. The match promises a pivotal moment for both players as they grapple with current form dips and aim for a confidence boost.

Denis Shapovalov vs Stefanos Tsitsipas Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

It's a battle of former top 10 single-handed backhands who are currently well below their best as Denis Shapovalov and Stefanos Tsitsipas square off in the first round of the Indian Wells Masters on Wednesday night.

Needless to say, this is a huge match for both players. Tsitsipas has been in all sorts for a couple of years now, struggling with a back injury and tumbling outside the top 40. Shapovalov meanwhile has lost 12 of his last 14 matches against top 50 players and seemingly can only play well in Dallas these days. Both players also have relatively average records at Indian Wells.

So with both players in poor form and not really peaking at this tournament, who emerges triumphant? I'm leaning towards Shapovalov as a slight underdog. The Canadian leads the H2H 4-2 and crucially, has won all four previous hardcourt meetings. He's got a clear matchup advantage on this surface and with Tsitsipas supremely down on confidence, the Canadian should be able to just about get the job done here.
  • Tsitsipas has lost five of his last eight matches vs top 40 players
  • Shapovalov has won all four previous hardcourt meetings between the pair
  • Shapovalov has won 21 of his last 26 matches vs players with a one-handed backhand
  • Tsitsipas has lost his last four matches vs players with a one-handed backhand

Denis Shapovalov Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 4-4
  • ATP Indian Wells Record: 7-7
  • Current Ranking: No. 39
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 10 (2020)

Safe to say Shapovalov hasn't progressed the way most of us thought when he burst onto the scene as a teenager and cracked the top 10 six years ago.

Shapovalov seemingly can only play well at Dallas at this stage of his career. He played some brilliant tennis to win the ATP 500 title last year and was again impressive to make the semi-finals last month, going down in a tight three-setter to eventual champion Ben Shelton.

However, that's been the highlight for Shapovalov in 2026 - he lost in the first round of Brisbane to Raphael Collignon and to veterans Marin Cilic and Pablo Carreno Busta in the second round of the Australian Open and first round of Dubai.

Stefanos Tsitsipas Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 9-5
  • ATP Indian Wells Record: 9-7
  • Current Ranking: No. 43
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 3 (2021)

Tsitsipas does technically have nine wins for the season, but six of those victories came against players outside the top 100.

The Greek went out in the first round of the Adelaide to Aleksandar Vukic, the second round of the Australian Open to Tomas Machac and the second round of Rotterdam to Botic Van De Zandschulp.

Not great results. Tsitsipas managed to get a good win over Daniil Medvedev in Doha, but was beaten in straight sets by Andre Rublev in the quarter-finals and then followed it up with an opening round exit in Dubai to Ugo Humbert.
