Arthur Fils will be aiming to reach his first Masters 1000 semi-final when he comes up against Alexander Zverev at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Thursday.

I backed Fils to win the third quarter of this draw at $15 pre-tournament, so there's an opportunity to hedge bets here by taking Zverev. But overall, I still like Fils to secure the upset - the Frenchman is back to his best tennis after a back injury and he's coming off the eighth top 10 victory of her career after upsetting Felix Auger-Aliassime in the previous round. Zverev played okay to overcome Frances Tiafoe, but he remains in unconvincing form to me, losing to Miomir Kecmanovic in his last tournament at Acapulco.

Fils has covered his +2.5 line in his last two hardcourt meetings with Zverev, beating the German in Miami last year. The Frenchman also made the quarter-finals in Indian Wells last year, so he obviously enjoys these conditions. There's always a chance Zverev just digs in, defends, refuses to miss and serves well to grind out the win in his typical fashion. But I backed Fils before the tournament and I believe he can cover in a close contest that goes Over 22.5 games.

Zverev continues to plug away at taking that next step in his career, but it seems more and more unlikely that he'll be able to break through for a major title or hit No. 1 in the world.

The German suffered more Grand Slam heartbreak as he blew a 5th set lead over a cramping Carlos Alcaraz in the Australian Open semi-finals and didn't play again until Acapulco late last month, where he suffered a second round loss to Miomir Kecmanovic.

Having never been beyond the quarter-finals at Indian Wells, Zverev is back into the last eight for the third time after wins over Matteo Berrettini, Brandon Nakashima and Frances Tiafoe.

Zverev made 70 per cent of his first serves to ease past Tiafoe 6-3 6-4, earning his ninth win over the American.

The 21-year-old is one of the brightest young prospects in tennis and I've got no doubt he cracks the top 10 at some stage over the last 12 months if he stays healthy.

After making a run to the Doha final last month, Fils has made it back-to-back Indian Wells Masters quarter-finals this tournament.

Fils hasn't dropped a set on his way to the last eight, taking out Dino Prizmic and Marton Fucsovics before registering the eighth top 10 win of his career, beating Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3 7-6(9) - coming back from 0-5 down in the second set tiebreak.
