Melbourne United – The Dynasty Nobody Talks About

When you think of sporting dynasties in Victoria, you think of the Melbourne Storm or Geelong Cats. But Melbourne United deserve to be in the same breath.

Since Dean Vickerman took over in 2017, United have won over 65% of their games, averaged more than 90 points per match, and made the NBL Finals almost every season.

“They are the benchmark, the Storm, the Cats, and now United,” Ryan said.
“Vickerman has built consistency, culture, and results.”

They’ve won two titles (2018 & 2021), plus multiple regular season crowns. The debate isn’t whether they’re great, it’s whether we’re witnessing an era.

Perth Wildcats – Contenders or Pretenders?

Perth sit inside the top four, but Jez doesn’t buy it.

“They’re nowhere near being a contender in NBL26,” he said.

The loss of Bryce Cotton looms large. Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. has been a weapon (21 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks), but the rest of the roster lacks consistency. Dylan Windler shines in bursts but fades against quality opponents.

Ryan added:

“They can put points on bad teams but struggle against the good ones, that’s not a contender.”

Until Perth find another star or stabilise their bench, they’re closer to middle-of-the-pack menace than title threat.

The Import Issue – NBL’s Biggest Hurdle

The NBL is widely considered the second-best league in the world, yet it’s still struggling to retain its best imports.

“You can have an MVP-level import one year, and they’re gone the next, off to Asia or Europe,” Ryan said.

Fans lose connection, clubs lose identity, and jerseys lose relevance. The solution?
Longer contracts. Retention incentives. Player/club options. Stability equals growth.

“Look at Melbourne, sustained success through continuity,” Jez added.
“If the league wants to grow globally, imports need roots, not visas.”

Adam Forde & the Taipans – Time’s Up in Cairns?

Ryan didn’t hold back:

“The time for Adam Forde is over, baby.”

After four seasons, the Cairns Taipans have hovered between mediocrity and missed potential. Despite signing Jack McVeigh, Admiral Schofield, and Andrew Andrews, the Taipans’ average losing margin sits around 23 points per game.

Forde’s developmental reputation is strong, but that might be his ceiling.

“He’s great with young talent, not superstars,” Ryan said.
“If you’re going to spend big, you need a coach who can handle personalities and pressure.”

Jez agreed that Cairns’ defensive structure has collapsed, and the disconnect between McVeigh’s role and output highlights a deeper coaching issue.
