Geelong's finals pedigree is hard to ignore, they have made 20 of the past 23 finals series and won at least one final in all but three of those campaigns. But their form against Carlton specifically is a genuine concern, with the Blues winning three straight and four of the last five head-to-head meetings, including a 4-point classic in Round 12 this year at the MCG.
Both sides arrive in red-hot form but from very different starting points. Geelong cruised into finals with six straight wins by an average of 35 points, capped by a 57-point demolition of Richmond in Round 24 that also marked Jeremy Cameron's first game back from a shoulder injury.
Carlton's path has been far more dramatic, after starting 1-8 and parting with coach Michael Voss, the Blues have gone 11-1-2 under Josh Fraser, capped by a come-from-behind 19-point win over Melbourne in the wildcard final after conceding the first four goals of the game. The catch for Carlton though is the turnaround, Geelong have had a full week off, while the Blues back up on just six days' rest after an emotionally and physically draining comeback.
Geelong's forward-half pressure is ranked first in the competition for forward-half intercepts, inside-50 differential and points from the forward half. This is where the clearest avenue to grind Carlton down over four quarters is, even with the Blues holding a clear disposal advantage of their own.
Take Geelong to cover -7.5, the total to go Over 171.5, Oliver Henry to kick 2+ goals, and Bailey Smith to go over 32.5 disposals at the MCG on Friday night.
- Geelong have a full week's rest compared to Carlton's six-day turnaround after an emotionally taxing wildcard win, a real factor in a knockout final.
- Geelong rank 1st in Forward Half Intercepts and Inside 50 differential.
- Bailey Smith is averaging 32.6 disposals a game this season, 2nd most in the AFL, he had 35 disposals against Carlton back in Round 12.
- Oliver Henry has kicked 2+ goals in 4 of his last 5 games and is one of three genuine forward targets for the Cats.
Head to Head Stats
Carlton actually leads the all-time series 122 wins to 104 and has had the wood on Geelong lately winning three straight and four of the last five clashes. Geelong's only win in that stretch a 13-point victory back in 2024. The most recent meeting, in Round 12 this year, went right down to the wire before Patrick Cripps kicked the sealer in a 4-point Carlton win at the MCG.
Geelong Cats Form Analysis
Geelong beat Richmond 133-76 at GMHBA Stadium in Round 24, with Shannon Neale kicking 4 goals and Bailey Smith racking up 40 disposals. It capped a six-game winning streak worth an average of 35 points and secured the Cats a top-six finish and a week's rest heading into finals.
Jeremy Cameron made his return from a shoulder injury in that game, managing 22 disposals split across the forward line, wing and defence, and will be pushed further into attack this week alongside Neale and Oliver Henry. Geelong sit 5th and are contesting their 20th finals campaign in the past 23 seasons.
Carlton Blues Form Analysis
Carlton beat Melbourne 74-55 at the MCG in the wildcard final, overcoming a four-goal deficit early to book an elimination final berth. Sam Walsh was outstanding with 39 disposals, seven clearances and five inside 50s, while finals debutant Jagga Smith added 29 disposals and 2 goals.
The result extended Carlton's remarkable turnaround under interim coach Josh Fraser to 11 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses across 14 matches since a 1-8 start under Michael Voss. Carlton now backs up on a six-day break, having beaten Geelong three straight times, including four of their last five meetings overall.
