Fremantle Dockers vs Hawthorn AFL Qualifying Final Tips - Hawks to give minor premiers a run for their money
The Fremantle Dockers, minor premiers, face a stern test from 4th-placed Hawthorn in the 2026 AFL Qualifying Final. Hawthorn’s controlled possession style and midfield flexibility make them capable of challenging Fremantle at Optus Stadium, though Fremantle’s forward power through Jye Amiss and defensive structure could prove decisive. Recent encounters have been close, with standout performances from Jai Newcombe (Hawks) and Caleb Serong (Dockers). While Fremantle hold home advantage and favorites tag, Hawthorn’s resilience and adaptability ensure a tightly contested clash is expected.
- The game will be played at Optus Stadium on Thursday, 3rd September, with the bounce at 8:10pm (AEST).

Hawthorn will give the minor premiers, Fremantle, a run for their money when the two sides meet in the Qualifying Final.
The Hawks finished 4th on the ladder after the home-and-away season and face the road trip to Perth, with the Dockers earning that right after finishing the regular season on top.
But Hawthorn have the type of game that can make this uncomfortable for Fremantle. At their best, the Hawks are prepared to control possession through uncontested marks and switches before attacking when the opposition defence has been moved out of shape. They showed against Collingwood that they can adjust when that control is taken away, changing their structure after half-time and finding a way back into the contest after being starved of forward entries early. That flexibility should give them a chance to absorb periods of Fremantle dominance and remain within the 16.5-point start.
The challenge will be winning enough clean ball around the contest to launch that game, and that brings Jai Newcombe into play. Hawthorn have increasingly used a flexible midfield mix, with Dylan Moore and Connor Macdonald capable of rotating through, while Newcombe and Will Day can also push forward. That should make it difficult for Fremantle to completely lock onto one midfielder, and Newcombe can spend enough time at the coalface to work his way to 25+ disposals.
Fremantle's best route to victory is likely to come from forcing Hawthorn into a more contested game and then capitalising once they establish territory. The Dockers have shown a willingness to use Hayden Young and Matt Johnson defensively around stoppage against dangerous opposition midfielders, which could help prevent Hawthorn from generating clean exits. From there, the return of Jye Amiss gives Fremantle another genuine target alongside Josh Treacy, and if the Dockers can lock the ball in their front half for extended periods, Amiss should get enough one-on-one opportunities to kick 3+ goals.
- The past three matches between the two sides have been decided by 15 points or less with two of those held at Optus Stadium.
- Hawthorn have won their past two interstate finals.
- Jai Newcombe has averaged 29 disposals in the five finals matches he has played.
- Jye Amiss has booted 19 goals in his past five matches.
Head to Head Stats
Fremantle have won the past two matches between the two sides, taking out the Round 9 match this season at Optus Stadium by 15 points, as well as the Round 18 clash last year at the venue by 13. Hawthorn led at three-quarter time in both of those matches before conceding late goals.
Standout player performances in the recent head to heads have come from:
- Caleb Serong (Freo) - 28+ disposals in his past two matches against the Hawks.
- Karl Amon (Hawks) - 30+ disposals in his past two matches against Freo.
- Jack Gunston (Hawks) - six goals the last time the two sides met.
- Josh Treacy (Freo) - 12 goals in five matches against the Hawks.
Fremantle Dockers Form Analysis
Fremantle finished on top of the ladder to claim the minor premiership and earned home-ground advantage for the Qualifying Final. The Dockers wrapped up top spot with a 24-point win over Adelaide in Round 23 and have been particularly difficult to beat at Optus Stadium. Their Round 21 win over the Western Bulldogs was another example of their ability to grind down opposition at the venue, kicking seven goals to one after half-time in a 37-point victory.
The Dockers have not been flawless heading into September, losing to Melbourne in Round 22 before suffering a 37-point defeat against Carlton in the final round. There were mitigating circumstances against the Blues, with several regulars rested and game time managed for Andrew Brayshaw, Caleb Serong and Hayden Young, but Fremantle were beaten around the contest and conceded their highest score of the season. That came after they had shown their ability to respond during matches against Port Adelaide, turning a two-goal half-time deficit into a 28-point victory after taking control at stoppage and kicking five goals in the opening 13 minutes of the third quarter.
Their forward line remains one of the major strengths heading into the finals. Jye Amiss has kicked 19 goals across his past five matches and returns after being managed in Round 24, while Josh Treacy kicked three goals against Carlton. Caleb Serong and Andrew Brayshaw continue to provide the midfield foundation, with Brayshaw recording 30 disposals and Serong 28 against Port Adelaide. Fremantle's ability to win the contest and then lock the ball in their front half has been a feature of their best football and will be important against a Hawthorn side capable of controlling possession.
Hawthorn Form Analysis
Hawthorn finished 4th on the ladder to secure a double chance and enter the finals after a 62-point win over West Coast at Optus Stadium. The Hawks were dominant early, opening a 47-point lead during the second quarter before wet conditions made their percentage chase more difficult. Nick Watson kicked three goals, Will Day finished with 23 disposals and two goals and Dylan Moore had 22 disposals and nine inside 50s, while Jack Gunston marked his 300th game with five goals.
Their form across the final month has been mixed, but they have shown an ability to respond when challenged. Hawthorn suffered a heavy 67-point defeat against Brisbane in Round 22 before producing a much stronger performance against Collingwood, coming from 22 points down at half-time to secure their second draw against the Magpies this season. The Hawks adjusted after being beaten around clearance in the first half and found a better balance between their possession game and winning territory after the break.
Jai Newcombe remains central to Hawthorn's midfield and has averaged 29 disposals across his five career finals. He recorded 34 disposals and 12 clearances against North Melbourne in Round 21 and was among Hawthorn's better players in the loss to Brisbane. The Hawks also have several avenues to goal, with Watson producing bags of five against Richmond and North Melbourne during the run home, while Gunston kicked seven against Essendon before his five-goal performance against West Coast. Their ability to spread the scoring load gives Fremantle's defence plenty to consider.
