Mount Gambier hosts a nine-race program this Friday, headlined by the $70,000 Gold Cup. Key selections include Maracourt (each way in the Cup), Geffina (to win Race 4), Hard Leaf (to win Race 5), and Cup Day Baby (each way in Race 3). Proven wet-track specialists and recent form from strong meetings like Morphettville and Warrnambool bolster the competition. The card features well-placed horses, in-form stables, and horses drawn to benefit from prevailing conditions. The main recommendation is to follow the wet-track form and current stable momentum for top results.

Thomas Foods International Maiden Plate Tips (Race 3)

Mount Gambier Value Bet - Race 3 No. 6 Cup Day Baby

The four-year-old made three jump-out appearances ahead of her debut at Ballarat early last month.

That debut effort saw the mare finish a well-held ninth over 1400m in a maiden contest on a Good 4 surface.

Cup Day Baby jumped at big odds and settled midfield after coming across from a wide barrier on that occasion.

The fifth placegetter from that race has since won at Werribee, while the mare herself took a step forward when seventh at the same venue next time.

A further improvement is expected third-up and the booking of Jacob Opperman catches the eye for this wet-track assignment.

Mount Gambier Best Bet - Race 4 No. 6 Geffina

Aaron Purcell’s mare has been in good form through 2026, including a narrow defeat at Terang on her penultimate start.

Geffina started a $1.90 favourite for that 1400m BM66 contest and performed strongly on a Heavy 10 surface despite the defeat.

The mare then defied a wide barrier to score at Warrnambool over the same distance at BM70 level.

That latest success also came on a Heavy 10 track and any further deterioration in conditions would only enhance her chances.

Geffina draws well here and the daughter of Impending looks capable of following up for the in-form stable.

Mount Gambier Next Best Bet - Race 5 No. 1 Hard Leaf

The son of Long Leaf broke through for his first win of the campaign over this distance at Oakbank in March.

Hard Leaf came home more than two lengths clear of his nearest rival in that BM0-56 contest on rain-affected ground.

The gelding then backed that effort up with a placing in BM0-62 company over the same course and distance.

Both of those performances came on wet tracks before two disappointing efforts followed on drier surfaces.

A return to wet turf conditions is expected to suit and Hard Leaf has also placed in all three previous starts at this venue.

Mount Gambier Feature Bet - Race 8 No. 3 Maracourt

The seven-year-old has performed well at this venue previously, recording a win and two further placings from four appearances.

Maracourt resumed this preparation with a narrow second in the Capetal The Vintage at Oakbank early last month.

The gelding then contested two stronger races at Morphettville and was not disgraced when sixth over 1600m there last time out.

That race has already produced two subsequent winners, with both the seventh and ninth placegetters scoring on the Parks circuit last Saturday.

Maracourt is untested at this distance, although the Michael Hickmott-trained galloper brings strong form references into the Gold Cup.
