Twilight racing at Mornington on Wednesday presents an eight-race program with a strong mix of exposed form and progressive runners across the card.

With several horses dropping in grade or returning to preferred conditions, the meeting shapes as one where clear betting angles emerge through the middle and late races.

Mornington Tips December 17

Big Event Picnic Tables Handicap Tips (Race 2)

Mornington Best Bet - Race 2 No. 3 Genrichero

The New Zealand-bred has had a busy twelve months, making sixteen appearances during that period.

Those sixteen starts have produced three victories, with the most recent coming at Sale in October.

That win was recorded in a 2200m Benchmark 66 on a Soft 7 surface, where he raced wide without cover before drawing clear by two lengths.

While Matt Laurie’s representative has been unable to win in two subsequent starts, he has performed creditably on both occasions at Caulfield.

He was beaten just one-and-a-quarter lengths when seventh of nine in a Benchmark 84 over 2400m late last month, and the drop in grade, with Luke Currie again aboard, looks a positive stepping up in distance.

The Big Screen Company Maiden Plate Tips (Race 4)

Mornington Roughie - Race 4 No. 12 Toy Queen

The daughter of Alabama Express was sold cheaply twice in 2024, but she showed ability in two of her three jumpout appearances.

Those efforts included a 750m synthetic win at Pakenham, followed by a third over 1000m at Moe nine days later.

She made her race debut on a Heavy 8 surface at Traralgon late last month over 1100m.

Racing prominently in a seven-runner contest, the filly was beaten less than a length when finishing third.

She steps up in distance here, is expected to improve second-up, and barrier eight should pose few issues for Emma-Lee and David Browne’s representative on a forecast Good 4.

Modtech Group Electricians Handicap Tips (Race 6)

Mornington Value Bet - Race 6 No. 8 Torsheen

The filly failed to fire on a wet track at Sandown in May when making her sole appearance as a two-year-old.

She showed sharp improvement when resuming in August, winning a 1200m maiden on soft ground at Moe.

A change of tactics saw her lead on that occasion, and she then backed it up with a second when again racing on the pace at Sandown.

That effort came over 1300m in a Benchmark 64 on the Hillside course, where she proved effective on a Good 4 surface.

She has since jumped at big odds in two metro runs, returns off a jumpout second at this venue, and looks value back in Benchmark 64 company.

Mornington Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 9 Sketch

The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained filly showed promise when placing in her first two starts this preparation.

Those runs included a second over 1200m at Kilmore on good ground and a half-length third over 1400m at Ballarat, both in October.

She broke through for her maiden win when a short-priced favourite over 1600m on the Heath track at Caulfield last month.

Returning to Caulfield seventeen days later, she competed in Listed company and finished less than three lengths from the winner when fifth over 1400m.

The step up to 1500m suits, she carries a favourable weight, and with apprentice Luke Cartwright aboard she looks capable of recording another win.
