Midweek racing at Ascot on Wednesday is headlined by the Listed A.T.A. Stakes, supported by a competitive seven-race program featuring progressive types and proven performers.

The December 17 card brings together emerging runners and established performers, with several horses stepping into favourable conditions and shaping as key betting prospects.

Ascot Tips December 17

A1 Engineering Maiden Tips (Race 1)

Ascot Next Best Bet - Race 1 No. 3 Bannered

While well held in fifth, Bannered was honest on debut in January in a race won by Luana Miss, who has since become a dual Listed winner.

Spelled after that first run, the Darren McAuliffe-trained galloper was again competitive in solid company during his second campaign.

He rounded out the winter with placings behind stakes-class runners Playin’it Sweet and King Of Light.

Off a tidy trial win, Bannered was well backed on return on November 30.

He was only picked off late by the fitter Don’t Wink, who was dropping out of Listed company, while fourth-placed Double The Fun has since won at Pinjarra.

Swan Draught Handicap Tips (Race 2)

Ascot Value Bet - Race 2 No. 2 Jazalot

Jazalot has done little wrong in just five career starts, which included a stylish debut win in March.

That first preparation concluded with an unlucky Kalgoorlie run that was far better than the seventh-of-eleven result suggests.

He outperformed a 20/1 quote when finishing third on spring resumption at Bunbury, and the winner of that race later placed at Ascot.

The four-year-old was better supported in the market second-up over 1400m and again produced a solid performance.

Stepping to 1500m looks worth a try on that effort, this race doesn’t appear any stronger, and attractive odds remain available.

A.T.A. Stakes Tips (Race 6)

Ascot Feature Bet - Race 6 No. 5 Playhouse Patron

Forever Boy and Stormageddon were the two standout performers from the G.A. Towton Stakes, and the market has reflected that.

At bigger odds, Playhouse Patron was supported at a big price in the same race, which he won last year before another honest effort in this feature.

He whacked away fairly in his December 6 attempt and has improved with each appearance this campaign.

That includes a brave second-up performance when covering ground.

This race shapes as more open than the market suggests, and Playhouse Patron appeals as an each-way or exotic inclusion at a price.

Glenroy Chaff Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Ascot Best Bet - Race 7 No. 10 Territory Man

William Pike teams up with the Williams stable aboard Territory Man, a powerful jockey-trainer combination that has struck at just under 31% this season.

A debut winner last December, the gelding was spelled after finishing fifth at Ascot in February.

He returned with intent when recording the fastest last 600m and 400m while finishing third in a 1300m Class 1 at Belmont on December 3.

That form has been franked strongly, with the fifth, eighth and twelfth placegetters all going on to win subsequently.

Territory Man will appreciate more ground in time, but he looks capable of getting away with this assignment.
