Australia face a daunting challenge in Lahore for the 2nd ODI after a heavy defeat by Pakistan's spin-heavy attack in Rawalpindi. The Aussies, missing key players, struggled to reach 200 runs in conditions alien to their lineup, with Pakistan's debutant Arafat Minhas claiming five wickets. Pakistan, led by an emerging batting core and confident spinners, are strong favorites. The recommendation: back Pakistan for victory, Ghazi Ghori to score 25.5+ runs, and Matt Kuhnemann to take 2+ wickets. Expect more spin dominance and team shake-ups for Australia.

Pakistan vs Australia, 2nd ODI 2026 - Expert Prediction

Australia's spin problem isn't going away. They were outclassed in Rawalpindi on Saturday and the same issues will be waiting for them in Lahore on Tuesday.

Pakistan were simply too good in the first ODI. A dry pitch, four spinners in the lineup and a debutant who looked like he had played 50 ODIs and Australia had no answers. Arafat Minhas took 5-32 and barely looked like he was trying hard to do it. Australia's top order folded to 4-68 before Short and Renshaw steadied things and even they were eventually picked off. The total of 200 was never going to be enough.

The concerning part for Australia is not the loss itself but the manner of it. Eight wickets went to spin. Their squad is missing Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Travis Head who are their four best players in some form or another. What's left is a group of good cricketers being asked to punch above their weight in conditions that are as foreign to them as any they will face in world cricket. A dry Lahore pitch on Tuesday is unlikely to be kinder.

There is a selection shakeup looming after the horror starts from both Labuschagne and Green who both were dismissed for ducks in Rawalpindi. If younger replacements come in, there may be early nerves on debut which only helps Pakistan further. Inglis himself admitted they needed 30-40 more runs to make it interesting. On this tour, in these conditions, that gap is not getting bridged quickly.

Pakistan meanwhile have a young batting core who are growing in confidence. Ghazi Ghori made 65 in just his second ODI and did so with composure and timing. His knock featured eight fours and he was positive from the outset. Babar Azam at 69 off 94 was exactly what you expect from him, steady when it counted. Pakistan will back their spinners again and there is every reason to think they can win this series comfortably.

Take Pakistan to win. The multi of Pakistan win, Ghazi Ghori over 25.5 runs and Matt Kuhnemann to take 2+ wickets is the best play. Ghori top team fours at $8 is the value special.

  • Australia were bowled out for 200 with eight wickets taken by spin on a dry pitch that suited Pakistan perfectly and Lahore is expected to offer similar conditions.
  • Labuschagne and Cameron Green both made ducks in the first ODI and face selection pressure, meaning Lahore could see inexperienced replacements thrown into the fire against a quality spin attack.
  • Ghazi Ghori made 65 in just his second ODI, hitting eight fours as part of a 127-run stand with Babar Azam and looks set to build on that confidence on home soil.
  • Matt Kuhnemann bowled tidily in the first match and is the most likely wicket-taker for Australia if the pitch assists spin again, which makes his 2+ wicket line achievable even in a losing cause.

Head to Head

Pakistan and Australia have a long ODI history their most recent matchup was in Australia over the 2024/25 summer which Pakistan came back to win 2-1 after the Aussies won the first game in Melbourne. Australia beat Pakistan in a group game of the 2023 World Cup by 62 runs

Pakistan Form Analysis

Pakistan enter Tuesday on the back of a dominant performance. Their decision to field four spinners  paid off immediately, and while Shadab was expensive at 0-54, the others more than covered for him. The pace duo of Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf provided support at key moments, with Rauf accounting for Kuhnemann to end Australia's innings.

Babar Azam showed his class under pressure as the most experienced batter in a top four full of relative newcomers. Pakistan celebrated their 1000th ODI with a five-wicket win and will be in a relaxed, confident frame of mind heading into Lahore.

Australia Form Analysis

The tourists were sent in to bat and never really got going. Short and Carey started solidly enough before Abrar had Carey caught at slip for 19. The middle order then collapsed dramatically with Inglis, Labuschagne and Green all dismissed cheaply in quick succession to leave Australia staring down 4-68. Short's 55 and Renshaw's 61 were the only real contributions of note and both were eventually removed by Minhas and Abrar respectively.

The tail offered limited resistance despite Kuhnemann making 24 off 40 balls. Without the senior pace and batting options at their disposal, Australia will need one of their fringe players to stand up and produce a match-defining performance. That feels unlikely against a Pakistan side bowling on home soil in front of their own crowd.
