Coffs Harbour Tips September 3

Choose Petticoat For The Kosciuszko Maiden Handicap Tips (Race 2)

Coffs Harbour Next Best Bet - Race 2 No. 6 Pearl Pendant

There was enough merit in Pearl Pendant's first-up fifth here last month to suggest she can take another step forward.

The Kris Lees-trained filly had finished well back on debut at Wyong in March before being spelled, but showed improvement through her trials ahead of this preparation.

Dropped to 1000m on return, she raced without cover for much of the contest and still finished just three lengths from the winner.

That form has already received a boost, with the ninth and 11th placegetters both winning at their next starts, while the slightly firmer conditions should hold no concerns.

The daughter of Bivouac looks worth another chance at this trip and, from barrier two, Pearl Pendant gets every opportunity to break through.

Coffs Harbour Value Bet - Race 5 No. 1 Lord Vettori

A strong fresh record gives Lord Vettori plenty of appeal at a value price.

The five-year-old broke his maiden first-up at Grafton last preparation by just under two-and-a-half lengths before backing that up with a narrow second at Beaumont.

He had trouble securing clear running at the top of the straight in that runner-up effort and can be forgiven his subsequent Taree failure after making a respiratory noise.

Although those three runs came on Good ground, the son of Rubick has performed well in defeat on rain-affected surfaces previously.

With two trials under his belt and a cross-over noseband applied for the first time, Lord Vettori looks capable of making a strong return.

Tab Venue Mode Class 3 Handicap Tips (Race 6)

Coffs Harbour Best Bet - Race 6 No. 1 Rich Star

Rich Star put together an excellent preparation earlier this year, winning three straight at Grafton before narrowly missing a fourth consecutive victory at Taree.

The latest of those wins came in Class 2 company over 1000m, before he was bumped and beaten narrowly on Heavy ground in his following start.

The five-year-old returned at Grafton with a solid second in Benchmark 66 company, finishing one-and-a-half lengths from the winner over 1025m on Soft ground.

That effort should have brought him on fitness-wise and he has shown versatility across different track conditions, with all three career wins coming on Good ground.

Rich Star looks the main speed influence in this field and, from barrier eight, he should be able to roll forward and give them something to catch.

Carlton Dry Benchmark 58 Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Coffs Harbour Roughie - Race 8 No. 4 Olufsen

A return to Coffs Harbour could help Olufsen recapture some of his better form at a bigger price.

The five-year-old had put together three consecutive fourth-place finishes before producing a close third over 1005m here in late June.

He was ridden cold in that Benchmark 58 and finished strongly to go down narrowly, with the runner-up subsequently winning at its next start.

The following Tamworth run is worth forgiving after he backed up quickly, stretched to 1200m and drew the outside gate in a 13-runner field.

Freshened since, with a better barrier and Bailie Baker back aboard after partnering him in that June placing, Olufsen looks capable of surprising.
