Melbourne’s top order have struggled all season long with Josh Brown the best of them ranked 28th in Total Runs but an average of just 18.87. Jake Fraser-McGurk comes in at 46 with a 10.33 average with Marcus Harris scoring just 23 runs in his 3 games. I don’t have any confidence in any two of these three top order batsmen to produce 40+ scores which will be needed to get them to a respectable total or chase down the Heat.
Brisbane on the other hand were unlucky to not have inched themselves closer to a finals berth on Friday with a last ball loss to the Hurricanes. Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne made a significant difference with the bat and the ever reliable Matt Renshaw did his job.
While the Renegades have some dynamic weapons at their bowling disposal it pales in comparison to Brisbane who may be without spinner Matt Kuhnemann who injured his thumb in Friday’s loss. Spencer Johnson ranks 7th this season in wickets with 11 through 6 games played, Xavier Bartlett has the same number from 8 games a dangerous two pronged attack.
Brisbane have a winning pedigree, Melbourne do not. Take the Heat to temporarily keep their season alive with a win and to hit the most sixes with the Renegades giving up 27 at Marvel in their 3 games there. Spencer Johnson has proved his worth, let’s take him as best team bowler for Brissy.
- Brisbane have won their last 2 games against Melbourne
- 2 of the 3 batsmen that have opened for Melbourne have averages under 11 runs.
- Renegades opponents have scored 27 sixes in three games at Marvel Stadium this season.
- Spencer Johnson has taken 11 wickets in 6 games, the best average for any Brisbane bowler.

Melbourne Renegades Form
Melbourne took two wins from their first 3 games but then managed only 1 win across their next 6 games relegating them to the bottom of the standings. With one of Adelaide or Perth guaranteed a win which would elevate one of those teams to 8 points, the Renegades not only need to win they also need to greatly improve their Net Run Rate. A hard and improbable, but not impossible task.
Their most recent match against Hobart ended with a 4 wicket win to their opposition with 2 balls remaining in the game. The Renegades were sent in to bat in the 1st innings with the top order once again crumbling. Josh Brown (6), Marcus Harris (1) and Jake Fraser-McGurk (7) didn’t do much to move the needle and it wasn’t until Jacob Bethell stepped in hitting 87 from 50 balls including 8 fours and 4 sixes that a result looked possible. 7-154 is not a great total but manageable if a few quick wickets can be taken.
The Melbourne bowlers knew what was at stake and came out firing with Caleb Jewell falling in the 3rd over for 1 run off 6 balls. More wickets followed and projections had the Gades eeking out a win but the success with the ball dried up as quick as it came with the Canes middle order doing irreparable damage. Hobart’s captain Tim David hit the winning runs with ease with a couple balls left in the pipe.

Brisbane Heat Form
The Heat’s chances to defend their BBL13 crown took an extremely hard hit on Friday in a last ball loss to the Hobart Hurricanes. They will need to win this game and the Stars to lose to still be in with a shot.
Brisbane welcomed back Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne from International duties with Labuschagne immediately getting into the attack hitting 77 off 44 balls including 8 fours and 2 sixes, his wicket falling on the last ball of the innings trying to slog it for 6. Matt Renshaw (40) and Tom Alsop (39) also contributed to 6-201 total from 20 overs batting first.
The 2nd innings didn’t start well for the home team who were hit for a boundary off the first ball by Caleb Jewell who was then dropped off the very next ball. Jewell went on to score 76 off 49 balls setting his team up for victory.
Spencer Johnson ended up taking 3 wickets in the game while keeping a 6.5 economy rate, some of the best bowling figures this season across all teams.
