Argentina take on Switzerland in a crucial World Cup 2026 quarter-final at Arrowhead Stadium. While Argentina have benefited from a favourable run and remain reliant on Lionel Messi, Switzerland arrive with renewed confidence after overcoming Colombia on penalties. Team news notes Manzambi's fitness race for Switzerland, while Argentina debate between Alvarez or Lautaro to accompany Messi. Argentina vs Switzerland World Cup Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Argentina continue their pursuit of consecutive World Cup trophies when they face Switzerland in the quarter-finals at Arrowhead Stadium on Friday night.

I really think Argentina are there for the taking at this tournament, but it remains to be seen if Switzerland have the quality and firepower to take advantage. This will be the first team ranked inside FIFA's top 20 rankings that Argentina have faced since October 2025 - they've come up against Puerto Rico, Angola, Mauritania, Zambia, Honduras, Iceland, Algeria, Austria, Jordan, Cape Verde and Egypt since then.

No disrespect to those nations, but Argentina are about to face a real step up in quality and even if they get by the Swiss, I'd expect - at this stage - that either of Norway or England would be too good in the semi-finals. The Seleccion appear way too over-reliant on Lionel Messi, but I guess when the GOAT keeps banging in goals for fun you can't argue against it. But can Messi work his magic all by himself against the real elite nations? Time will tell.

Contrary to most of their footballing history, Switzerland have actually been pretty decent to watch at this World Cup, but they battened down the hatches and defended tremendously to keep an in-form and dangerous Colombia side at bay, ultimately keeping their cool to prevail on penalties and reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954.

Switzerland have a real opportunity to make history for their country here, but I'm not sure I can back them - especially if rising star and Newcastle United target Johan Manzambi remains sidelined with injury. I think the Swiss can score - after all, Argentina have leaked five goals in their last three games against Jordan, Cape Verde and Egypt - but I just get the feeling Messi will pop up to save his side again. Not confident and the Swiss do offer some value on current form, but will back Argentina to come through this before a semi-final elimination.
  • Argentina are on a 12-game winning streak
  • Argentina are unbeaten in their last 11 World Cup games, winning nine
  • Argentina have seen BTTS land in their last three games

  • Argentina have scored 2+ goals in their last 11 World Cup games
  • Switzerland have scored nine goals at this World Cup
  • Switzerland have seen BTTS land in five of their last seven games
  • Lionel Messi has scored eight goals in total this World Cup, finding the back of the net in all five games

Argentina vs Switzerland Head To Head

Argentina are unbeaten against Switzerland in seven previous meetings, winning five. Switzerland have won just two of their previous 10 World Cup games against South American nations - one of those was the penalty shootout victory over Colombia in the R16.

Argentina Form Analysis

As mentioned, Argentina have taken advantage of an incredibly soft draw - both in the group stage and knockout phase - to return to the quarter-finals, where they've also received, on paper, the kindest opponent out of any of the elite nations.

Argentina had no trouble swatting aside Austria, Algeria and Jordan in the group stage, but things have got much more complicated in the knockout stage.

Lionel Scaloni's side needed extra-time to subdue an inspired Cape Verde side, eventually prevailing 3-2, while their 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt in the R16 was shrouded in controversy.

Egypt had a goal ruled out by VAR for a very soft foul at the opposite end of the pitch and were later denied a penalty for the same amount of contact before Argentina raced up the field to score what was ultimately the winner.

It's certainly got the conspiracy theorists up and about, but at the end of the day, Messi produced more magic to play another starring role in his team's comeback, with Argentina recovering from 2-0 down in the 78th minute to advance.

Argentina Team News

Cristian Romero and Enzo Fernandez were the other goalscorers in that win - Messi also missed a penalty before his equaliser - and all will retain their starting spots here.

There's probably only room for one of Julian Alvarez or Lautaro Martinez to partner Messi in the final third.

Switzerland Form Analysis

It was a slow start for Switzerland at this World Cup, but they also took advantage of a soft group and a favourable draw in the knockout phase to make their first quarter-final since 1954.

After a 1-1 draw with Qatar, Murat Yakin's side defeated Bosnia and co-hosts Canada to top the group and earn a R32 clash with Algeria, where they were comfortable 2-0 winners.

Switzerland then set up perfectly to frustrate Colombia in attack, with Los Cafeteros lacking a quality and efficient striker to break through their defences.

Colombia missed a golden one-on-one chance deep into extra-time and Switzerland made no mistake in the shootout, despite Manuel Akanji missing with another howler from the spot.

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was the hero as he made a couple of good saves, meaning Switzerland are still yet to trail at any stage of this World Cup campaign - including qualifiers.

Switzerland Team News

Johan Manzambi missed the Colombia game and is racing the clock to be passed fit for this one as the 20-year-old also deals with his club future as Newcastle United are tipped to win the race for his signature.

Breel Embolo has 13 goal contributions in his last 17 internationals and will once again lead the line, supported by Ruben Vargas and Dan Ndoye.

Veteran midfielder Granit Xhaka captains the side.

Verdict

Argentina aren't convincing at all right now, but I do think they'll do just enough to advance again here - but not before Switzerland get on the scoresheet.
