Western Bulldogs vs West Coast Eagles AFL Round 18 Tips - Bulldogs to bully the Eagles at Marvel

The Western Bulldogs are set to face the West Coast Eagles in AFL Round 18 at Marvel Stadium, with expectations of a dominant Bulldogs win. Currently 8th on the ladder and fighting to avoid the wildcard zone, the Bulldogs come off a tough schedule and now face a struggling Eagles outfit with a poor Marvel Stadium record. Marcus Bontempelli is tipped to be influential, and the Dogs' clearance power should see them pile on the scoreboard pressure. The match is forecast to exceed the total points line, with the Bulldogs likely to win by a significant margin.

Western Bulldogs vs West Coast Eagles Preview

The Western Bulldogs will bury West Coast on Sunday at Marvel Stadium and maintain their chances of avoiding the wildcard zone.

The Dogs sit in 8th spot on the ladder, just one game behind 6th placed Melbourne and have a favourable draw to close out the season.

They have endured one of the toughest fixtures in the AFL this season, but Round 18 presents the perfect opportunity to remind the competition just how damaging they can be against lower-ranked opposition.

Having played just four matches against teams currently outside the top 10, the Bulldogs have rarely been afforded an opportunity to build percentage, and they should make the most of it against a West Coast side with an abysmal recent record at Marvel Stadium. Expect the Bulldogs to comfortably cover the line.

The Bulldogs remain one of the competition's premier clearance teams despite some inconsistent performances in recent weeks, and without having to contend with one of the AFL's dominant ruckmen this week after being destroyed by Sydney’s Brodie Grundy in Round 17, they are well placed to regain control at stoppages. Tim English is set to give first use to Marcus Bontempelli, Tom Liberatore and Ed Richards, with the Bulldogs generating repeat inside 50s throughout the afternoon.

Marvel Stadium has long been one of the Bulldogs' biggest advantages, particularly against developing interstate sides. Their speed of ball movement and willingness to attack through the corridor generally flourishes under the roof, while West Coast have repeatedly struggled to defend quick transitions at the venue. That combination should create plenty of scoring opportunities and points at both ends of the ground.

West Coast have shown encouraging signs with their young core over the past month, but their inability to start games remains a major concern. Falling behind early against a side that thrives on confidence and territory is a dangerous recipe at Marvel Stadium, particularly given the Bulldogs' ability to overwhelm opponents once they establish scoreboard pressure.

Marcus Bontempelli again looms as the game's most influential player. His ability to impact both around stoppages and inside forward 50 makes him a constant matchup headache if the Bulldogs dominate territory.

With West Coast likely to attack whenever opportunities arise through Harley Reid and Jake Waterman, this also shapes as a contest capable of producing a healthy total score with the over right in play.

The Bulldogs have built a habit over recent years of putting significant margins on weaker opponents, and despite an inconsistent campaign, this presents another ideal opportunity to do exactly that. West Coast's record at Marvel Stadium is among the worst in the competition, and unless the Eagles can produce a dramatic improvement around the contest, the Bulldogs should control the game from the opening bounce and record a convincing victory.

  • The Bulldogs have won the past two at Marvel Stadium against the Eagles by 94 and 76 points.
  • Marcus Bontempelli has kicked five goals in his past two matches against West Coast.
  • Seven of the past 10 matches at Marvel Stadium have gone over 183 points.
  • The Eagles have lost their past 11 matches at Marvel Stadium by an average margin of 63 points, with eight of those defeats by 50 points or more. Their lowest losing margin during that stretch was 29 points.

Head to Head Stats

The Bulldogs have won the past two between the two sides by 94 points and 76 points, with both of those matches played at Marvel Stadium. However, the Eagles recorded a seven-point upset in 2023. The Bulldogs have won seven of the past eight meetings, with their past four victories over West Coast all coming by margins of 55 points or more.

Standout player performances in the recent head-to-heads have come from;

  • Marcus Bontempelli (Dogs) – 30+ disposals in two of his past three matches against the Eagles and five goals from his past two
  • Rhylee West (Dogs) – three goals in the most recent head-to-head
  • Bailey Dale (Dogs) – 25+ disposals in his past four against the Eagles, including 34 in the most recent meeting

Western Bulldogs Form Analysis

The Bulldogs have endured an up-and-down campaign and head into Round 18 having lost two of their past three matches. They were beaten by 35 points at the SCG last weekend after defeating St Kilda by 22 points at Marvel Stadium the week before, and now return to a venue where they hold a solid 5-4 record in 2026.

Their fixture has been among the toughest in the AFL. Remarkably, the Bulldogs have played just four matches against sides currently outside the top 10, winning all four, making this one of the rare occasions they face a lower-ranked opponent. Last season they regularly piled on big margins against teams below them, and this shapes as another opportunity to rediscover that ruthless streak.

The Bulldogs were unable to consistently connect inside 50 against Sydney despite winning first possession at stoppages. They finished only three ahead in clearances despite dominating first possessions and generated 20 fewer inside 50s, while their ball use entering attack was well below their usual standard. Those issues are far less likely to be exposed against a younger West Coast outfit.

Bailey Dale again led the way with a game-high 32 disposals and has now produced 30 or more in five of his past seven matches. Ed Richards continued his outstanding season with 29 disposals and has now recorded 25 or more in three of his past four outings.

Western Bulldogs Team News

The Bulldogs will monitor Connor Budarick after he suffered a lower leg injury against Sydney and was unable to finish the match. His availability remains in doubt heading into Round 18.

Nick Coffield was assessed for concussion late in the match and will also need to be monitored. Riley Garcia and Bailey Williams are edging closer towards a return from injury, while Rhylee West responded to his omission with a solid match in the VFL.

West Coast Eagles Form Analysis

West Coast enter Round 18 with a 4-12 record and have now lost four consecutive matches. After narrow defeats to Port Adelaide and North Melbourne, they were comfortably beaten by Carlton before producing a more competitive performance in a 25-point loss to Adelaide last weekend.

The Eagles again paid the price for a slow start, conceding the opening four goals before fighting back admirably throughout the remainder of the contest. Their inability to consistently compete early has become a recurring theme in 2026 and is a dangerous habit against quality opposition.

Harley Reid led the side with 23 disposals and six clearances, while Jake Waterman and Jobe Shanahan each kicked three goals. Bailey Williams improved after a difficult opening quarter in the ruck, while young midfielder Oliver Francou impressed on debut with 18 disposals and nine tackles.

Although the Eagles have shown encouraging signs through their emerging talent, their record away from home remains a significant concern and Marvel Stadium has been an especially difficult venue, where they have lost 11 straight matches.

West Coast Eagles Team News

The Eagles escaped last week's loss without any fresh injuries and should take a similar squad into Round 18. Jake Waterman overcame late cramp to finish the Adelaide match, while there are no concerns over his availability.

Young midfielder Oliver Francou made an impressive AFL debut and is expected to retain his place after providing strong pressure and composure around the contest. Ryan Maric, Fin Macrae and Elijah Hewett will be considered on the back of some solid form in the WAFL last weekend.
