Where the St Kilda Saints finish in 2025: 13
Not enough has changed at St. Kilda to expect an improved position on the ladder in 2025. With a couple of sides that finished under them expected to improve, the Saints are predicted to finish in 13th, one spot down on last season.
Kicking goals was not a strength for the Saints, finishing as a bottom four side in total goals. Despite a top-eight defence turning their strength into attack was lacking and they have not done enough in the offseason to see them make drastic changes in that department.
Projected Win total: 11
The Saints had 11 wins and 12 losses in 2024 and that is what is expected of them again in 2025.
With their suffocating defence, they will give themselves a good chance to win matches and keep things close, however, they will need to prove that they have what it takes in transition to open up quickly from their collapsing style of defence.
The addition of Jack Macrae will help, but not enough to warrant an improvement without seeing the evidence first.
Best Contender for Brownlow Medal: Jack Sinclair
Jack Sinclair showed his versatility in 2024 playing both at halfback and in the midfield and excelled with an average of 27 disposals and 5 intercept possession along with seven goals, which was the most he has kicked in 7 years.
Sinclair is the key link between the backline and the midfield for the Saints, who like to hold onto possession and run the ball through the hands where they can.
What’s to like
The addition of Jack Macrae to the Saints it sets up an exciting and dynamic combination with Jack Steele in the midfield which will be St. Kilda’s biggest strength.
At times in 2024, the Saints attack and ball movement was very one dimensional and the responsibility rested on the quality of game Steele was having. Now with Macrae in the mix, the Saints will lead on the three-time All-Australian to direct traffic and lead from the front, making a lasting impression on the youth at the club.
What’s NOT to like
The Saints were one of the better defensive teams in the competition but a variation on the rule of ‘defence wins championships’, because if you can’t attack it all becomes worthless. The addition of Macrae should bolster the attack of the Saints but is it enough to see them improve on their goal scoring ability?
