It's an intriguing opening round matchup at the Rome Masters as teen sensation Joao Fonseca comes up against the flashy Fabian Marozsan on Thursday.

It's been a whirlwind season to date for Fonseca, but he's only managed one win on European clay so far this swing and he will want to generate some more momentum before Roland Garros. Meanwhile, Marozsan is back at the scene of his breakout tournament, where he qualified for Rome before going on to beat Carlos Alcaraz on his way to the fourth round.
I'm expecting a closely fought contest here. Marozsan is in decent form with five wins from his last eight matches and he obviously likes the conditions in Rome. Fonseca has been prone to concentration lapses so far in his short career, so I can't see the Brazilian running away with this match. I'm backing Over 21.5 total games and Marozsan to cover with a +3.5 games start.

It hasn't been a great season for Marozsan as he comes into this encounter with an even 11-11 record.
Marozsan started the year in solid enough fashion, reaching the quarter-finals in Hong Kong with a top 10 scalp over Andrey Rublev before going on to reach the third round of the Australian Open.
However, the Hungarian failed to win back-to-back matches at tour-level until the ATP 500 event in Munich last month, where he advanced to the semi-finals before going down to Alexander Zverev.
Marozsan lost in the opening round of Madrid to Flavio Cobolli in straight sets and will be hoping to draw on his fond memories of Rome, where in 2023 he was able to beat the likes of Jiri Lehecka and Carlos Alcaraz to reach the R16.
Joao Fonseca Form
Fonseca has well and truly announced himself as a future star this season, achieving various notable results and rising to a current mark of No. 61 in the world.
The 18-year-old has already secured his maiden ATP title on the clay of Buenos Aires, along with winning two strong Challenger titles in Canberra and Phoenix.
After also claiming the Next Gen ATP Finals title at the end of 2024, Fonseca caused shockwaves when he completely dismantled Andrey Rublev in straight sets in the opening round of the Australian Open for his first top 10 victory.
Fonseca produced more highlight reel stuff in making the Miami third round, going down in a close contest to Alex de Minaur, while he was also edged out in two tiebreaks in Madrid by Tommy Paul.
The Brazilian opted to drop down to Challenger level in Estoril last week, but wasn't able to get going in a straight sets opening round defeat against Jesper de Jong.

Can't see Fonseca winning this match cleanly - the Brazilian has lost three of his last four matches and Marozsan is capable of some big tennis, recently making the 500-level Munich semi-finals, while he's also defeated Alcaraz at this tournament.
