It's a top six showdown to kick off A-League Round 5 on Friday night as Adelaide United welcome reigning champions Melbourne City to Coopers Stadium on Friday night.

A-League is back after the international break and we've got a great contest to launch the action on Friday night. Adelaide have made a bright start to the season, winning both of their home games, while they also have a tremendous recent record at Coopers against their opponents. City meanwhile are unbeaten across their opening four games, while they are also making an impact on the continental stage, winning back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite games.

City probably deserve favouritism, but they've struggled at this venue over the last seven years. Indeed, City haven't tasted victory at Coopers since 2018, failing to win the last 10 encounters between the teams. Adelaide always lift in front of their home fans and they're a perfect two wins from two at Coopers to begin the campaign. I'm backing the Reds in the Double Chance market as the best bet, with a smaller stake on the hosts winning outright and handing City their first defeat of the season.

Head To Head

We've already mentioned Adelaide's great home form over City, but they are also unbeaten in 10 of the last 11 meetings overall. The most-recent clash resulted in a 0-0 stalemate in Round 28 last term. Adelaide have won their last three home games against City by 1-0, 6-0 and 4-2 scores.

Adelaide United Form

It's been a solid start to the season for Adelaide after they ended last term poorly and were knocked out in the opening round of the Australia Cup.

Unsurprisingly, the Reds have performed better at home, defeating Sydney FC 2-1 in Round 1 at Coopers before a most-recent 2-0 triumph over the Wanderers.

In between, Adelaide suffered 2-1 defeats to both Auckland FC and Macarthur FC on the road.

Airton Andrioli's side will be hoping to draw on memories from their last outing at Coopers, which saw the Reds take all three points over Western Sydney, with veteran Craig Goodwin and youngster Luka Jovanovic scoring twice in a five-minute second-half ambush.

Melbourne City Form

City have experienced a busy start to the new season, juggling both A-League and Champions League commitments.

Aurelio Vidmar's team opened their A-League campaign with a draw against the Wanderers before thumping resident battlers Perth 4-0. City couldn't back that win up as they settled for a 0-0 stalemate with Brisbane, but they've since won back-to-back games.

Indeed, City produced a sparkling performance to topple Japanese side Machida on the road in the Champions League before registering a 2-0 triumph over cross-town rivals Melbourne Victory before the break.

In a rematch of last season's Grand Final, City doubled down on their rivals and claimed further bragging rights, with Academy graduates Max Caputo and Peter Antoniou getting on the scoresheet.

Caputo has been on fire to start the season, topping the A-League goalscoring charts with four strikes.
