Northam Tips August 6

AFGRI Equipment Northam Maiden Tips (Race 2)

Northam Value Bet - Race 2 No. 9 Kute As Can Be

There was good money for Kute As Can Be when she resumed at Northam on July 23.

Fired straight to the front from a wide barrier, the filly went too hard early and weakened late, although she was far from disgraced when beaten just over three-and-a-half lengths into fifth.

That maiden was won by the talented but raw Delzee, while runner-up The Rocket franked the form with a big Belmont victory on Wednesday.

Connections clearly have an opinion of Kute As Can Be, who competed in Saturday metropolitan company throughout her six-run juvenile season, which culminated with a midfield finish in the Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic in February.

The first-up market support followed a June 15 trial where she worked every bit as well as stablemate Dawn Dancer, who won both July starts, including a late-season two-year-old Saturday event at Belmont.

Northam Best Bet - Race 6 No. 5 Marcos

Following a third on debut at Bunbury in March, Marcos was tested twice at Listed level during the autumn before being spelled.

That campaign included a fourth over 1000m at Ascot before he rounded out his first preparation with a sixth-of-10 in the Perth Stakes on April 4.

The gelding appears to have furnished in his second campaign, backing up one winter trial with a strong first-up victory at Belmont on July 29.

Despite racing keenly in the back half of the field, Marcos pinned his ears back when required and recorded the second-fastest final 200m of the meeting to score over 1200m.

It is a short turnaround early in the preparation, but connections have found an average Class 1, and with prior metropolitan form around both placegetters from his maiden and the extra 100m likely to suit, Marcos can go on with it.

Northam Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 1 Let’s Talk

With little early speed drawn to his inside, Let’s Talk should be able to roll forward under 2kg claimer Chanel Cooper.

The Jim Taylor-trained galloper is well placed dropping back to a provincial Class 5 after completing three winter runs, all in Saturday metropolitan company.

The pick of those efforts was a runner-up finish when resuming in a 60+ event on May 30 behind the talented Bassett Hound, who completed a hat-trick at his next appearance.

After a plain second-up performance, Let’s Talk stuck on reasonably well with a month between runs on July 18 in a race won by In Confidence, who scored again at Belmont last Saturday.

Despite finding a much easier assignment, he rises just 1kg, while his January Ascot victory over subsequent metropolitan winners King Hit and Platinum Shot reads very well for this, with the former having completed a hat-trick in town.
