Ballarat Value Bet - Race 3 No. 3 Lady In Red

Improved performances since switching to the synthetic track make Lady In Red an appealing option at the early prices.

The daughter of Gold Standard has recorded three top-three finishes from four appearances here, with her only disappointing effort coming over 1200m.

She arrives on the back of a half-length second over this distance, where she settled behind the speed from an inside draw before finding only a strong-finishing runner too good.

Although that form is yet to be tested, her previous third at this venue is working out well, with the runner-up and sixth both winning at their next starts.

Tony and Calvin McEvoy enjoyed a strong season at this track, and after performing well from a wide barrier on her first appearance here, Lady In Red rates as value to break through.

Ballarat Best Bet - Race 5 No. 1 Spirited Defence

Four wins from seven starts at this venue highlight Spirited Defence’s affinity for the Ballarat synthetic track.

All four victories have come over this distance, including a comfortable two-length success in a similar race at the end of June.

Jumping from barrier three, the gelding settled sixth for much of the 1200m contest before finishing strongly to score.

He then backed up with a fourth over the same trip at Pakenham, where he was beaten more than four-and-a-half lengths but still performed creditably in his first synthetic-track appearance away from Ballarat.

John Allen returns after riding him to victory in June, and although Spirited Defence must concede weight to his rivals, he looks capable of returning to winning form.

Hygain Edge Fillies & Mares BM56 Handicap Tips (Race 6)

Ballarat Next Best Bet - Race 6 No. 2 Bliss Bomb

A promising return from more than 17 months off saw Bliss Bomb finish second over 1000m on this surface in June.

The lightly raced mare was beaten less than two lengths in the seven-runner affair after being ridden cold from the widest barrier.

She had valid excuses for a below-par effort at Sandown subsequently, where she encountered a Heavy 9 for the first time in her Victorian metropolitan debut.

The rise to 1100m should not pose a concern, while barrier four gives her a much kinder draw.

A return to country company is another positive, and with Harry Coffey retaining the ride, Bliss Bomb is selected to record the second victory of her career.

Hygain Edge BM66 Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Ballarat Roughie - Race 8 No. 7 Newcombe

A maiden victory here two starts ago confirmed Newcombe’s ability on the synthetic surface.

The gelding was slow away and held up in the straight before being switched wide and getting up in the closing stages.

That form received a boost when the runner-up won at Swan Hill next time, while Newcombe then proved the performance was no fluke by finishing a half-length third over the same course and distance.

He again draws an inside barrier and should receive every opportunity to settle closer than he has in recent starts.

Although rising from Benchmark 56 company, Newcombe reunites with maiden-winning rider Teo Nugent and may be capable of surprising for trainer Ann-Jeanette Tindale.
