Canterbury Next Best Bets - Race 1 No. 1 Yoshida & No. 8 Queen's Gamble

Two gallopers who appeal in Sydney's opener on Wednesday are Yoshida and Queen's Gamble.

We were with Yoshida on debut at Canterbury on July 22, where the gelding briefly looked the winner before Persian Wonder got to work, and there should be further improvement to come following just one lead-up trial and two hit-outs early last season.

Persian Wonder was Group 3-placed in March, and while there is some depth to this maiden, the double-figure quote available for Yoshida is surprising.

Heading the early market is Queen's Gamble, who found 900m too sharp when placing on debut before producing the fastest final 400m and 200m of the entire July 22 program here.

She may have won that latest maiden with a kinder draw, while winner Krasina had previously been luckless in a late-season two-year-old handicap and has since placed in a Midway at Rosehill, so the form looks strong.

Canterbury Favourite - Race 2 No. 7 Glissando

A half-sister to 2019 Thousand Guineas winner Flit, Glissando found 1100m a touch sharp on debut at Randwick Kensington on July 1, although the effort was better than it reads after she recorded the second-fastest final 200m of the program.

The Godolphin filly progressed sharply with a rise in distance and a more positive ride at Kembla Grange, where she controlled the race and scored by three-and-a-half lengths in solid time for maiden company.

Although she enjoyed every favour on that occasion, barrier one should allow her to settle on speed again at Canterbury, with James McDonald taking the ride.

Another rise in trip is unlikely to trouble Glissando, and while this is clearly harder, the race appears there for the taking.

Namaste could be the saver at longer odds after a flat second-up performance at Kembla Grange, with his return in Saturday company being sound, while the blinkers are reapplied and he also draws kinder third-up.

Canterbury Best Bet - Race 3 No. 4 Harry's Evidence

Prepared by the Ryan and Alexiou stable, which is a noted fresh yard, Harry's Evidence resumed from a longer spell with a maiden victory at Wyong on January 25.

A disappointing second-up performance followed when ridden much closer, but the gelding quickly atoned with a third-up success at Kembla Grange.

Nothing went right in two metropolitan appearances during April, with Harry's Evidence held up at key stages when third at Warwick Farm before never seeing daylight over the final 200m at his next start.

The campaign ended with a competitive midfield finish in a Saturday Benchmark 78 at Hawkesbury, where he settled back and was forced to work during the run.

Ahead of Wednesday's resumption, Harry's Evidence caught the eye when narrowly winning a Rosehill trial under a firm hold on July 24, getting the better of the handy Scillato, and this is the easiest metro race that he's seen.

Canterbury Value Bet - Race 7 No. 10 Supreme Sovereign

A short first Australian preparation should have helped Supreme Sovereign acclimatise, with European imports often requiring a campaign before producing their best form.

The five-year-old was not disgraced when sixth-of-11 on his debut for the Chris Waller stable at Caulfield Heath in February before being given time following a flatter second-up performance over the mile at Pakenham.

Two quiet Sydney trials prepared him for a return over 1400m at Warwick Farm on July 15, including an encouraging third in his second hit-out at that venue.

After settling back from a wide barrier, Supreme Sovereign produced a pass mark fresh after searching for clear running on straightening and working home in restricted room when finishing alongside It's A Wonder, who was Group competitive in her previous campaign.

This does not appear any harder, and with the extra 150m in his favour second-up, Supreme Sovereign is among the each-way contenders in a competitive Canterbury finale.
