Cranbourne hosts Victorian midweek country racing on August 5, with a Soft 6 track and possible further downgrades due to forecast rain. Key selections include Pressurised (Race 4) dropping in grade and nearing peak fitness, Fehmarn (Race 5) for value after a strong return, Alien Angel (Race 6) as top pick following a debut win, and Fly By Light (Race 8) with proven track success and gear changes. The recommendation is to monitor track conditions and favour runners proven in the wet.

Cranbourne Tips August 5

Cranbourne Next Best Bet - Race 4 No. 5 Pressurised

Very well bred as the second foal out of Group 1 winner Galaxy Star, Pressurised remains lightly raced and all three starts since joining the Mitchell Leek stable have contained merit.

That includes his Victorian debut at Pakenham on May 29, where he was ridden cold over 2000m at a big price before working home strongly.

Although well held in Saturday company next time, the son of Pierro still managed a midfield finish at Flemington before improving to third-of-10 in another three-year-old handicap on July 25.

Connections should now have him near peak fitness after three runs this preparation, including his past two over 2400m or further, while he was also five weeks between runs when second-up at Flemington.

A significant drop in grade is in his favour, and Pressurised can offset the wide draw by pushing forward under Lachlan Neindorf, who has a 19% strike rate at Cranbourne over the past 12 months and three winners from nine rides in August.

Cranbourne Value Bet - Race 5 No. 7 Fehmarn

Race inexperience proved costly for Fehmarn on debut at Pakenham on May 15, where he settled off the speed, covered ground and raced greenly before finishing third-of-six.

Sent out much shorter in the market a fortnight later, he rewarded those odds-on punters with a dominant three-and-a-half-length maiden victory over 1000m.

Connections then tested him in a three-year-old handicap at Flemington on June 20, and although disappointing, he would not be the first young horse to struggle at his first appearance down the straight.

Freshened since that run, Fehmarn won a tick-over jump-out at Mornington on July 29, while regular rider Remi Tremsal has barrier one at his disposal for this return around a bend.

Apart from that city failure, the gelding has hardly put a hoof wrong and proved himself in testing conditions two starts ago when saluting on a Heavy 9.

Cranbourne Best Bet - Race 6 No. 4 Alien Angel

Although the wide barrier appears the main query on paper, it may not be the worst place to be late in the program if the track becomes testing.

Alien Angel resumes from a slick debut victory at Cranbourne on July 16, where the Hayes-trained filly saluted despite drifting in the market.

The extra 100m should not trouble the lightly raced four-year-old, who looks capable of reaching at least a mile as her second campaign progresses.

There was a strong opinion of her when she started a short-priced favourite in a Sale maiden on February 1, but she raced greenly when a well-held third and was sent back to the paddock before improving with every jump-out and winning on a Heavy 9 first-up.

This does not appear the deepest race against her own sex, with Vienna Vixen and Tan Tat Delight dropping in grade but well held in their latest appearances on testing tracks, while Alien Angel looks the runner still on an upwards spiral.

Vale Billy Boy Canteen Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Cranbourne Favourite - Race 8 No. 3 Fly By Light

Clinton McDonald has an outstanding strike rate at his home track over the past 12 months, with 12 Cranbourne winners from 23 starters, which is better than 52%, while an ROI of 138% goes along with that.

Among those victories was Fly By Light, who did a bit wrong but still bolted in with a Cranbourne maiden on debut.

The gelding was given time after failing here second-up in Benchmark 64 company and was respected in the market for his June 27 return in a Saturday three-year-old handicap at Caulfield, where he again disappointed.

Freshened since that appearance, Fly By Light completed a Cranbourne jump-out on July 20 and has several gear changes, with the cross-over noseband removed and a nose roll applied.

A strong senior rider in Mark Zahra taking over is another positive, and with the rise to 1200m and a drop in grade, Fly By Light has the ability to atone in the Cranbourne finale.
