Gosford Next Best Bet - Race 4 No. 3 Gus The Great
Jockey Chad Schofield enjoyed a 20% strike rate in July, while August has started with three winners and a placegetter from seven rides ahead of Thursday’s Gosford program.
Schofield has partnered Gus The Great in all four appearances, with the gelding spelling after a debut fourth on Heavy ground before recording a hat-trick of placings during his second campaign earlier this year.
That preparation included a metropolitan third and a Wyong second behind subsequent Queensland Derby winner Providence, before he was beaten as favourite by Satirically, who bolted in with a BM66 at Sandown two starts later.
Although drawn wide, Gus The Great has shown good intent to settle on speed in two July trials, so hopefully Schofield is positive, while the favourite brings the best exposed form into the race.
Fly The Wind is an outsider to consider after showing promise on debut in December, with her encouraging July trials suggesting she can outperform a huge starting price, although she’s likely to furnish over more ground.

Gosford Value Bets - Race 6 No. 7 Parthenon & No. 13 Street Lyric
The early market support for debutant Parthenon comes as no surprise, with the three-year-old looking forward enough to make an immediate impact.
Prepared by local trainer Kylie Gavenlock, who has recorded half of her winners over the past 12 months at Gosford, the gelding comfortably won a 1000m trial here in April without being extended.
Parthenon was equally impressive when narrowly reeled in during his latest July 22 hit-out, where he travelled under a firm grip throughout and could easily have won with greater intent.
Olivia Chambers retains the ride and claims 2kg, while early favourite Street Lyric also appeals after showing a sharp turn-of-foot under minimal riding to win a Gosford trial on July 22.
The Nathan Doyle-trained filly was slightly disappointing when supported on debut at Muswellbrook, but she remains a leading chance should the first emergency gain a start.

Gosford Best Bet - Race 7 No. 4 Forest King
Taking on older opposition is rarely straightforward for an early-season three-year-old, but Forest King remains lightly raced and should ultimately prove the best horse to emerge from this contest.
The O’Shea and Charlton-trained galloper drops in grade after being well held in a late-season two-year-old handicap at Rosehill, where he appeared not to handle the testing Heavy 9 surface.
That was his first appearance since two winter trials and an initial campaign that began with a comfortable Canterbury debut victory on February 27, despite the youngster still doing a few things wrong.
That performance earned him a place in the Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes at his second start before he was spelled following the March 14 feature at Rosehill, and he can spark second-up back at the provincials.
Blinkers are applied for the first time and Tommy Berry takes the reins on Thursday, with his 10 Gosford winners over the past 12 months coming at a superb strike rate of 40%.
