Doomben Tips May 16

Race 1 - 11:48AM Moreton Hire Class 6 Handicap Tips (1350m)

4. Cosmo Centaurus is Zac Purton's opening ride on the program and the champion hoop combines with Rob Heathcote, a four-year-old who is aiming for a hat-trick. He does go up in the weights again, but handled the penalty and testing conditions to complete a double at Eagle Farm last start when giving plenty of weight to the quinella.

This doesn't appear to be all that much harder, while his sole Doomben victory came first-up in October with a big weight and he did salute comfortably.

2. Midnight Dynamite heads the market and kept whacking away with 61kg for a brave fresh win at Randwick. Form out of that is just fair, but there's enough references for this, and from barrier one under James McDonald, he should be able to find the front early. Wetter ground this time around is no issue.

3. Boys Night Out could be the bolter. He was well held behind Cosmo Centaurus fresh at a big price. However, a rise in trip suits, and wet ground is no knock. Nash Rawiller has a 23% career strike-rate for the Matthew Dunn yard.

8. Express Payment is up in grade, but it was a nice return and he carries 4kg less from that. There's also an opportunity to land closer here from gate three.

Selections: 4-2-3-8.

Race 2 - 12:23PM Drinkwise BM85 Handicap Tips (1600m)

14. Our Queen has a wide barrier and a tricky map as a result, however, she has been consistent since her first-up victory in Sydney. Those recent New South Wales references are stronger than what she's facing here, including the last-start third when a single-figure quote for the Group 3 Hawkesbury Crown.

The lightly raced five-year-old ran the fastest last 200m of that feature. She is still yet to tick the mile box, but is seemingly looking for this extra trip going off her recent efforts.

11. Perfect Play had no prior fresh wins, so the April 25 effort was a pass mark where fitness just gave out late. The gelding brings decent second-up stats and carries 2kg less here with a senior hoop jumping aboard. He can push forward and whack away at a decent price.

4. Cranky Harry put in a bit of a stinker first-up at the Gold Coast, but he's another with no great fresh record and can improve sharply, with two wins and a runner-up from four second-up attempts.

13. Diamond Epic completed a double before a break and wasn't given much hope by the April 25 return. The sectionals there were still good and she'll only strip fitter.

Selections: 14-11-4-13.

Race 3 - 12:58PM XXXX QTIS 3yo Plate Tips (1350m)

4. Estremo is one of four single-figure chances in this race and it is hard to split these main market contenders. Three of them are from the Chris Waller yard, which includes Estremo, who was just fair at Hawkesbury last start as a beaten favourite, but that was on a shifty surface.

It was still a pass mark after an encouraging return in a decent affair, and we saw his class throughout a consistent first campaign, which included a win via his only try on heavy ground. He drops back against his own age on Saturday and there's still improvement to come.

3. Fabulantes completed a hat-trick earlier in the year. He didn't exactly have all favours in that stretch either, which included a Soft 7 triumph before a freshen-up and returning in the Daybreak Lover. He was checked at a key stage, but fitness gave out late irrespective in a race won by Brave Monarch, who franked that form in the Queensland Guineas.

1. Burma Star split a handy pair on return, while it was an improved third-up effort in the Hawkesbury Guineas behind a talented Skyhook. His stakes victory was recorded fourth-up in spring over a similar journey.

2. Hidden Achievement caught the eye late in the Hawkesbury Guineas, although he was 100/1 there, and Burma Star had more than a length on the stablemate.

Selections: 4-3-1-2.

Race 4 - 1:33PM Seven Spirit Of Boom Classic Tips (1200m)

3. Vantorix is an interesting youngster from the astute Jenny Graham yard in Port Macquarie, winning as an odds-on favourite on debut before a break. It was a soft victory again, as it should have been as a $1.10 favourite when resuming at Grafton last month, with a trial win since that resumption.

He now gets to 1200m and looks to test himself in the Brisbane juvenile features, kicking off in this Group 2 where the classy type is an outright favourite in what appears a thin race. James McDonald’s engagement is an easy lead to like. He is likely to shorten right up for the JJ Atkins if he justifies Saturday's quote.

7. West Coast could be one to speculate each-way on at a monster quote going off a decent trial. His only sibling, La Bella Boom, showed plenty as a youngster, especially on soft tracks. An in-form Tommy Berry takes the debut engagement.

9. Dream Roca is no world beater, but a very honest and professional juvenile who was competitive fresh at 1000m. Back up to 1200m suits, the journey of her Karaka Millions success.

4. Coastal Boom has thrown away both autumn efforts. He is very raw, but has class and a slight drop in trip for now should suit.

Selections: 3-7-9-4.

Race 5 - 2:08PM Sky Racing Bernborough Handicap Tips (1600m)

15. Viking Invasion could be one to entertain at a big price, albeit this is an extremely open race and nothing would surprise here. This import is on Australian debut for Sunshine Coast trainer Stuart Kendrick. All of his European wins are on wet ground, including a brave Listed triumph in his latest run in October.

There were some good references around that French race, but we haven't seen him in any public work leading into this. Despite the last win coming over 2500m, he placed over seven furlongs twice as a youngster and perhaps a testing 1600m brings him into it.

13. Blindedbythelight does look the one to beat on recent form, although reportedly they're going to scratch her due to a wide gate. She was very honest on return when second to Idle Flyer fresh, who was a Group 1 winner at her next start, and you can put a line through the last effort in Adelaide when badly held up in the straight.

2. Welwal now goes sharply back up in the weights, but he is racing very well and bounced back to winning form third-up at Rosehill. The key to him is wet ground, so underfoot conditions will suit on Saturday.

8. Cote Atlantique heads the market and is racing consistently with a hat-trick of seconds leading in. He had every chance last start, though, and there's more depth to this.

Selections: 15-13-2-8.

Race 6 - 2:43PM Magic Millions Bright Shadow Tips (1110m)

11. Nepo Baby showed above-average ability with back-to-back wins in her first prep before a spell. She hasn't saluted this year in four tries, but has still been in the money in all attempts, the last three at Group level. She was also freshened up ahead of her second at The Championships before going five weeks between runs in last week's Gold Coast Guineas.

In her favour on Saturday is coming back against her own sex, as is the slight drop in trip. Now down on the 53kg minimum, this could be her chance to pinch a black-type event.

3. Austmarr is a big mare who often takes some racing as she carries a lot of condition. All things equal, she is arguably the classiest sprinter in this field and there's room to spike off a solid Hawkesbury resumption. She now has Zac Purton in the saddle, while the Godolphin representative has proven adept on good and wet surfaces.

2. The Black Cloud has been freshened since a competitive Group 1 Galaxy run and was a Listed winner in her last Brisbane visit. Joe Pride won this last year with In Flight and wet ground brings her further into calculations.

8. Cigar Flick is hard to catch, but conditions will suit. She's a two-time first-up winner and the trials have been good. You have to include her at a big price.

Selections: 11-3-2-8.

Race 7 - 3:22PM JRA Chairman's Handicap Tips (2000m)

15. So You Are had the jury out on him after the short and failed Melbourne prep back in spring, although he was at the end of a long and stretched-out campaign there and interstate travel may have brought him further on, with the four-year-old improving with every run this autumn.

He appreciated the rise in distance last start when saluting at Eagle Farm, while a switch back to Doomben is no knock as he hasn't finished out of the money in four tries here. Getting up in trip is another positive for the son of So You Think. It's a bigger test here, but you can only see him running well in a competitive race.

8. Nellie Leylax is the best-weighted contender coming out of that BM90 behind So You Are and carries 5.5kg less this time around, and that's despite a senior jockey jumping back aboard. He can mix his form, although he thrives on wet ground. His last win was a Heavy 10 victory in a Group 3 over this distance.

4. Royal Supremacy needs to improve sharply, although he was also unsuited fresh in the Hawkesbury Cup when covering ground in a slowly run affair. He was racing very consistently leading into his Melbourne Cup attempt last year, with the highlight coming via a Group 1 triumph in the Metrop.

11. Belvedere Boys comes out of the BM90 mentioned and has 4.5kg less from that May 2 event. He has won two of three at Doomben and has a decent wet track record.

Selections: 15-8-4-11.

Race 8 - 4:02PM Ladbrokes Doomben 10,000 Tips (1200m)

12. Grafterburners is a colt who only had a light lead-up ahead of what was a scheduled resumption in The Galaxy, but he was scratched at the barriers from that Group 1 and instead went back north before returning to Sydney to resume in the Group 2 Arrowfield Stud Stakes. While he wouldn't have defeated the winner Tempted irrespective, perhaps he should have finished runner-up in that Group 2.

That hot three-year-old affair has already produced two stakes winners, while fourth placegetter Marhoona arrived there off a Group 1 Galaxy win. With further travel completed along with a trial last week, he should only strip fitter for the Doomben 10,000 assignment, where champion hoop Zac Purton takes the reins.

1. Jimmysstar has improved in two outings since a disappointing William Reid Stakes return, the latest a third in the All Aged Stakes when working home against the pattern of that day with the second-fastest last 600m and 400m of the April 18 card. He can hold form deep into campaigns and his last two fourth-up appearances have both resulted in victories on Soft tracks.

13. Skybird can mix her form, which was evident in the third-up flop in Adelaide last start. But we know the class is there when Skybird is right. Connections have been chasing a wet track this whole time with the five-year-old, who placed behind both Joliestar and Giga Kick second-up on a Soft 7 in the TJ Smith Stakes, which is certainly a good enough reference for this.

3. Another Wil didn't come up in a short spring prep, which leaves obvious queries, but the market has had him much shorter multiple times in deeper races than this and his fresh stats are good. He could be the forgotten horse.

Selections: 12-1-13-3.

Race 9 - 4:38PM HKJC World Pool Rough Habit Plate Tips (2000m)

8. Accidental Bid has won both Australian starts and there was a sharp rating spike in his latest when going from 1600m to 2000m at Pakenham and recording a monster performance on a Heavy 8. That April 16 romp saw him heavily fancied for the South Australian Derby. Unfortunately, he couldn't get into the race, staying as the first emergency.

Now Ciaron Maher heads north on a Queensland Derby path where it looks as though they'll get underfoot conditions to suit and, while there's maybe a touch more depth than what was offered in South Australia, this still isn't strong and he could be the one with all of the upside.

5. Southern Prince is the blowout at a generous quote. He was a touch plain second-up in Sydney, but not disgraced, and maybe it was understandable being flat given he did cover ground first-up. He was progressing nicely over spring, with back-to-back wins before a good closing effort in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes over this distance.

2. Providence is one of four Chris Waller acceptors and the champion trainer has a great record in this race, aiming for his seventh Rough Habit Plate win and a fourth in a row. The second in the Frank Packer Plate has him in the mix.

6. O'Sheamus was going nowhere early in the campaign, but blinkers on sharpened him up for the Frank Packer Plate when getting home nicely after finding trouble, and the subsequent trial win was terrific.

Selections: 8-5-2-6.
