Doomben Next Best Bet - Race 1 No. 2 Tommy Thug
The Irish-bred gelding brings plenty of race experience with sixteen starts to his name and has shown up well in two runs at Hawkesbury this preparation.
He resumed with a fourth over 1500m on a Good 4 track last month, finishing just over two and a half lengths from the winner, before stepping up to 1800m and placing second under similar conditions.
That form suggests he’s holding his fitness well, and the step back up in trip here looks ideal.
A proven wet-track performer, he’s also shown tactical versatility, racing effectively both on speed and when ridden more patiently.
Now under the care of Ciaron Maher and crossing the border from New South Wales, Tommy Thug finds a winnable race against just six rivals and can finally break through.

Doomben Value Bet - Race 3 No. 8 On Point Pixie
Paul Shailer’s filly showed promise last season with several honest placings, including a third at Eagle Farm over 1400m in April followed by a second at Ipswich later that month.
All six of her starts last campaign came on soft tracks, and she resumed this prep with a fourth over 1200m at Eagle Farm before returning there for a fifth-placed effort next time out.
She was beaten around four lengths on each occasion, but both runs were on firmer ground, and she should appreciate any give in the track here.
Drawn well and retaining Dylan Turner, who has ridden her in both starts this time in, she looks well placed to take advantage of the inside alley.
With fitness on her side and a return to preferred conditions, On Point Pixie shapes as a genuine value chance to notch her first win.

Doomben Best Bet - Race 6 No. 3 Balance The Books
This well-bred four-year-old fetched NZD$200,000 at the Karaka Yearling Sale in 2023 and has continued to impress since joining Tony Gollan’s stable.
By Capitalist, she showed strong trial form prior to her debut, winning heats at Doomben and Deagon before finishing runner-up in two 1000m trials on wet ground.
Her first racetrack appearance came in a 1200m maiden at this venue in May, where she produced a smart turn of foot from off the pace to score by nearly two lengths on a Good 4 track.
The form from that event has stacked up nicely, with multiple subsequent winners among the beaten brigade.
Spelled after that victory and trialling well in preparation for her return, Balance The Books again teams up with Angela Jones and looks capable of maintaining her unbeaten record.

Doomben Roughie - Race 8 No. 5 Hell And Back
The five-year-old has a clear liking for rain-affected ground, boasting two wins and two placings from four starts on soft tracks.
His best performance came at Ipswich in January when taking out a 1200m Benchmark 58 handicap, and he has remained consistent since.
Three runs ago he scored over 1300m at Toowoomba before finishing down the track at Eagle Farm, then bounced back with a solid second at Gold Coast earlier this month.
That latest run came in a 1400m Class 3, and the form has held up well, with the fifth-placed horse winning at its next start.
Angela Jones sticks from a good draw, and while he’s up against a handy field, Hell And Back is one to keep safe at odds given his record on softer going.
