Belmont Favourite - Race 2 No. 3 Strapping Prophet

With one win from 12 starts, Strapping Prophet has been costly for punters, although he's still been in the money on 10 occasions and Jason Whiting is back aboard here.

His only time out of the top four came last start on a Heavy 8, while the son of Universal Ruler hadn't done much wrong in the four starts leading into that most recent attempt.

Yes, they were all runner-up finishes, but he covered ground first-up in a narrow defeat before running into Herault, a smart three-year-old who was stakes-placed last month.

In his two June outings, the winners had less weight and better runs, with the gelding giving 2.5kg to Flaming Ronda before God's Grin pounced on June 20 carrying 4.5kg less.

This isn't much of a race, with his main market threats being Here For Cheques, who hasn't won since March last year when breaking a 10-month drought, while Secret Identity is also on the second line of betting despite not having been in the winner's stall for three years.

Belmont Best Bet - Race 3 No. 9 Long Service Leaf

The 1000m is so often regarded as a specialist's distance, and that could well be the case for Long Service Leaf, which his record clearly reflects.

He's unbeaten from four tries over this distance, including back-to-back Belmont wins to open the campaign, while all three defeats have come at 1200m, the latest in a 62+ taken out by the very progressive Bassett Hound.

There's plenty of positives here, with the freshen-up and drop back in trip being ticks, as is the sharp reduction in the weights, with the three-year-old carrying 5kg less than his June 13 attempt.

Things could also be starting to turn for the Neville Parnham stable after a lean patch, preparing Wednesday winner God's Gate along with a double on Thursday's Northam program.

Chris Parnham stays aboard Long Service Leaf, who will need a pinch of luck in transit from a low draw, but with his main threat Kay Tee Why failing to produce this prep, this youngster can bounce back under more suitable conditions.

Mrs Mac's Handicap Tips (Race 4)

Belmont Value Bet - Race 4 No. 8 Southern Firetail

Each-way odds are available for all runners outside of the odds-on elect, with the favourite Western Miss always going to be well found carrying the cerise and white of Bob Peters and with William Pike aboard, the filly chasing four straight victories.

The knocks on Western Miss are that she's now very deep into her first preparation, interestingly dropping back to 1400m with a 3.5kg weight rise.

She's also likely to strike a firmer surface this time around after recording the hat-trick on wet tracks, with two of her wins coming on Soft 7 ground.

Southern Firetail could be the forgotten horse, with the son of Maschino having been well fancied on debut in a three-year-old event at Ascot, doing little in that December assignment before improving with racing and getting on the board at start three.

That Pinjarra field included Common Touch, who has since completed a winter hat-trick, while he's been given time since a February 18 failure and looked quite sharp when taking out a Lark Hill trial over 950m on July 13.

H.G. Bolton Sprint Tips (Race 7)

Belmont Feature Bet - Race 7 No. 12 Twisted Steel

The main lead-up was the Beaufine Stakes on July 11, which was taken out by Immortal Bliss, who has to be right in contention again and sits on the second line of betting.

One at a big price that was arguably the run of that affair was Jazz Session, with the five-year-old also bringing a good second-up record, having never finished outside the quinella in six previous attempts over this trip, so she can be supported at a double-figure quote.

The sharp improver points towards Twisted Steel, who looked a little fresh in that resumption a fortnight ago when jumping from a wide draw.

We saw progression last preparation after a tough first-up run, when he settled outside the speed to salute second-up before bolting in when produced from cover to take out the Magic Millions WA Three-Year-Old Trophy at Pinjarra.

From the Beaufine Stakes, he meets Immortal Bliss 2kg better at the weights, and this time around Clint Johnston-Porter has a low draw at his disposal, giving Twisted Steel every chance to bounce back on Saturday.
