Illawarra Grange Value Bet - Race 4 No. 3 Autumn Flyer

From the same family as dual Group 1 winner and champion sire Fastnet Rock, Autumn Flyer remains a work in progress but has shown enough through two starts to warrant respect at a price.

The four-year-old completed only one winter trial before his August 15 debut at Kembla Grange, where there was support for the local at big odds, but things quickly became messy after he lacked the speed to take a position from a wide draw over 1000m.

He then raced fiercely, was checked off heels and remained green behind traffic in the straight before going to the line virtually untested, making that debut performance easy to forgive.

While still far from the finished product 15 days later, Autumn Flyer was again a little slow away but mustered more effectively under Adam Hyeronimus and, after attracting further market support, broke through over 1100m.

Hyeronimus stays aboard for Thursday's Class 1 assignment and the extra 100m should suit on both his racing style and pedigree, with the lightly raced gelding possessing enough upside to make the early double-figure quote appealing.

Illawarra Grange Next Best Bets - Race 5 No. 5 Zonkstar & No. 6 Spill It

There is some depth to this Class 1, but we are happy to be in the corner of both Zonkstar and Spill It, with the bigger price available about the former.

Zonkstar finished third in a decent Gosford trial on July 22 before making a professional winning debut at Newcastle on August 1, settling back, negotiating traffic and producing late to defeat Oakfield Iowa, who franked the form with a dominant victory at her next appearance.

The gelding has since moved well in an August 31 tick-over trial, going to the line under a hold in a heat won by pushed-out metropolitan winner Millie De Lune.

Spill It is the intriguing runner on Australian debut after being given a typical quiet Chris Waller trial on September 8, where he was allowed to find his feet from a wide draw before working through the line nicely.

The three-year-old showed above-average ability in New Zealand, improving from a debut second to score stylishly at start two, and with the rise in distance, firmer ground and James McDonald aboard, he looks capable of making an immediate impact.

Illawarra Grange Best Bet - Race 6 No. 4 Glastonbury Girl

The booking of Zac Lloyd is a significant positive for Glastonbury Girl, with the emerging rider striking at better than 29% for the Matthew Smith stable over the past 12 months.

The daughter of Churchill has been extremely consistent through nine starts, recording three wins and four placings, with her most recent victory coming on June 20 before a spell.

After a fair trial in a decent Warwick Farm heat, she resumed with a third at Gosford on August 28 and should arguably have finished closer after missing an opportunity to follow the eventual winner before running into trouble.

She would not have beaten Regal Problem regardless, but that mare has since franked the form with a metropolitan victory at Randwick-Kensington, while runner-up Wanda's Spark entered the race off a Canterbury maiden success and there was further depth through Fleet Flyer, Zou Royal and Zoe.

With that strong first-up reference behind her, natural improvement to come and Lloyd taking over in the saddle, Glastonbury Girl looks very well placed for win number four.
