Caulfield Heath Value Bet - Race 1 No. 3 Mehsun
European imports can often improve sharply with an Australian preparation under their belt, and lightly raced Mehsun showed enough through two autumn runs for Chris Waller to warrant respect first-up.
The better of those efforts came at Randwick-Kensington on April 27, where he worked home in restricted room and recorded the fastest final 600m, 400m and 200m of the Super Maiden.
He was safely held on the same circuit on May 13 before being given time, but his lead-up work ahead of this spring return suggests he may have come on from those two Australian starts.
The four-year-old was under a hold when third-of-six in an 800m Flemington jump-out on August 21 before winning a 1000m heat on September 4, again without being asked for much late and appearing capable of scoring by a bigger margin.
Mehsun draws barrier one with Damien Lane aboard, and with Lane already riding 12 winners this season at better than a 20% strike rate, the inside draw could prove a major advantage with several key market rivals drawn wider.

The combination of Ciaron Maher and apprentice Jabez Johnstone has been profitable to follow, striking at better than 24%, and the 2kg claim could prove valuable aboard Killenaule.
The gelding has been competitive in all three starts this preparation, with the form around each of those performances continuing to stand up.
He resumed with a second behind Stay Silent at Sandown Hillside on July 29, with that stablemate subsequently winning his next two starts in stronger company, including a Saturday Benchmark 84.
After placing third on the Lakeside circuit, Killenaule returned to Hillside over 1800m and finished runner-up to Emperor Tzu on September 2 despite covering ground, with that winner then stepping up in grade seven days later to defeat the handy Gold Chariot.
The draw is tricky, but Killenaule has tactical versatility and still appears to be learning his craft, while main danger Best Time comes through the same race and is building towards a win, but was safely held by the selection, who had fewer favours.
Evergreen Turf Handicap Tips (Race 7)
Caulfield Heath Favourite - Race 7 No. 8 In'kantosstar
Arguably the most interesting runner on the entire program is In'kantosstar, a full brother and stablemate to three-time Group 1 winner Jimmysstar who makes his metropolitan debut after completing a country double.
The four-year-old caught the eye in his sole summer appearance before a break and returned with an effortless Ballarat Synthetic win on August 11 when justifying a very short quote.
He then handled both the rise in grade and switch to a Soft 7 at Geelong on August 28, with that form already franked by runner-up Yauson, who bolted in at Seymour last Friday.
This is another step up against more established opposition, but several of those rivals appear to have reached their level, whereas In'kantosstar has shown genuine brilliance and still has plenty of upside.
Ethan Brown stays aboard for the hat-trick attempt and, although the gelding is still learning his craft, the rise to 1500m should pose no issue from a low draw in this Benchmark 70.

Caulfield Heath Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 11 The Volta
There was merit in all four autumn appearances from The Volta despite the John Moloney-trained mare failing to win during the campaign, with several of those races producing strong subsequent form.
Her most eye-catching effort came first-up over this distance on Mornington Cup Day, where she rattled home for second behind Torsheen, who subsequently proved competitive at Group 2 level after previously finishing runner-up in a strong Group 3 at Caulfield.
That Mornington race was further strengthened by Naifah, who went on to score impressively at Group 3 level in Adelaide before rounding out her winter with a Listed victory in Queensland.
The Volta then produced solid efforts through the Bendigo Guineas, where she finished two lengths from Gold Coast Belle, and at Flemington when third behind the smart Concorde Connie.
She has drawn wide, but her pattern is to settle back and launch late, and if they can make ground, she has the turn-of-foot to be charging home under Jake Noonan, who has partnered her for both career wins and runner-up finishes behind Davida and Sass Appeal, with the latter winning her next three starts at Flemington.
