Balaklava Next Best Bet - Race 3 No. 8 Majestic Fury
Some strong trial work preceded Majestic Fury’s debut, with the mare winning two of her three lead-up appearances before stepping out at Mildura earlier this month.
She overcame an awkward beginning to settle in midfield before working home strongly for second in the nine-runner maiden, beaten less than a length.
The daughter of Toronado was turned over at a short price on that occasion, but there was enough merit in the performance to suggest she will benefit from the race-day experience.
Majestic Fury handled the Soft 6 surface without issue and the slightly firmer conditions expected at Balaklava should pose no concern.
She stayed on strongly over 1008m on debut and shaped as though the rise in distance would suit, while barrier eight should be manageable as she looks to break through at start two.

Balaklava Best Bet - Race 5 No. 3 The Magistrate
The Magistrate ticks plenty of boxes dropping back to provincial company after contesting stronger races in Adelaide at his past two starts.
Both appearances came in Benchmark 0-66 company on the Morphettville Parks circuit, including his latest sixth over 1000m when beaten four lengths after racing keenly at stages on a wet track.
The drop in grade is a clear positive, while the veteran also boasts winning course form after breaking his maiden at Balaklava earlier in his career.
Although he handles Soft going, any further drying would be in his favour given four of his five career victories have come on Good ground.
Harry Grace should be able to secure a favourable position from barrier five and, back to a much more suitable level, The Magistrate looks capable of ending a lengthy run without a win.

Balaklava Value Bet - Race 7 No. 4 Chartin
A return to winning form came two starts ago for Chartin, who registered the fourth victory of his career over 2000m at Murray Bridge.
The New Zealand-bred gelding scored by one-and-a-half lengths in that Benchmark 0-58 on a Soft surface, with the form receiving some subsequent support from runners finishing behind him.
He backed that up with another strong performance at the same venue earlier this month, dropping to 1800m and finishing runner-up.
Chartin has also produced good efforts in defeat at Balaklava previously, while the rise back in distance poses no concern given he has already placed over this trip.
The eight-year-old has performed well from wide barriers in the past and, with Isaac Sit aboard, he appeals as a value chance to return to the winner’s list.

Balaklava Feature Bet - Race 9 No. 11 Cicala
Strong metropolitan form gives Cicala genuine claims in the Listed Balaklava Cup after two competitive efforts at Morphettville.
The mare most recently finished fifth over 1400m in the Listed Leon Macdonald Stakes on the Parks circuit, beaten only two-and-a-half lengths.
That followed a runner-up finish in the Group 3 Behemoth Stakes over 1200m on the main track, with both performances coming from wide barriers on Soft ground.
She has drawn more favourably this time and the rise in distance looks suitable, while a recent Strathalbyn trial should have her in good order for the feature.
Jamie Melham is an eye-catching booking and, with Will Clarken already knowing what it takes to win this race, Cicala looks capable of giving the Clarken and Charlotte Sorby partnership another Balaklava Cup success.
