Real Sociedad hosts Bournemouth in an eagerly anticipated Europa League Group Stage opener. Bournemouth, fresh from a historic sixth-place Premier League finish, debuts in European competition, known for their attacking football but also late-match lapses. Meanwhile, Sociedad returns after winning the Copa Del Rey but has struggled at home. With both sides often seeing goals at both ends, the key prediction is both teams to score and a draw, while Oyarzabal (Sociedad) and Tavernier (Bournemouth) are highlighted as likely to shine.

Real Sociedad vs Bournemouth Europa League Tips & Prediction

An entertaining contest awaits in San Sebastian on Thursday night, with both teams tipped to score in a share of the spoils as Bournemouth make their European debut against Real Sociedad on Matchday 1 of the Europa League.

Only four years after their last promotion back into the Premier League, Bournemouth will feature on the continental stage for the very first time, courtesy of their incredible sixth-place finish last term.

Bournemouth play an entertaining brand of attacking football, but their energetic press means they are prone to fatigue in the latter stages of matches.

That's ultimately contributed to an unwanted slice of history for the Cherries - they've become the first team in Premier League history to lead in all of their opening four games but fail to win any of them.

Indeed, Bournemouth have drawn three consecutive EPL fixtures coming into this clash and another share of the spoils looks decent value in the H2H market.

Real Sociedad return to the Europa League after a one-season absence courtesy of their Copa Del Rey triumph last term - but they they've failed to really get going this season and finished mid-table in La Liga in 2025/26.

Sociedad have also won just one of their last seven games in San Sebastian, so playing at home isn't really an advantage at the moment.

So both teams to score is the best bet for this one, with value on the draw. Spain's World Cup striker Mikel Oyarzabal will fancy himself to get off the mark for the season here, while Bournemouth winger Marcus Tavernier has been in great form and can have an impact in this one.
  • Bournemouth have seen BTTS land in six of their last seven competitive games
  • Sociedad have seen BTTS land in three of their last five games
  • Bournemouth have drawn five of their last seven games in all comps
  • Sociedad have won just one of their last seven home games
  • Mikel Oyarzabal has scored 10 goals in the Europa League
  • Marcus Tavernier has registered 13 shots in four EPL games this season, including 4 & 5 in his last two outings

Real Sociedad vs Bournemouth Head To Head

This will be the first meeting between the teams.

Real Sociedad Form Analysis

Sociedad have plenty of European experience, most recently making the R16 of the Champions League in 2023/24 and the same stage of the 2024/25 Europa League.

It wasn't a great La Liga season last term, but picking up the Copa Del Rey trophy propelled Sociedad back onto the European stage after a one-year absence.

Pellegrino Matarazzo's side haven't made a great start to this La Liga season - they've registered two wins, one draw and three defeats from six games to sit in 12th spot.

La Real were disappointing in their most-recent fixture, suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat at home against Atletico Madrid, meaning they've won just one of their last seven games in San Sebastian.

Real Sociedad Team News

Jon Aramburu is suspended from a red card he picked up against Man United in the 2024-25 Europa League.

Alvaro Odriozola and Igor Zubeldia are unavailable through injury.

It's been a slow start to the season for star striker Oyarzabal - he's only picked up two assists across his opening six appearances, but with 10 goals in this competition, the World Cup winner could return to form here.

Real Sociedad Possible Starting XI (4-4-2): Unai Marrero; Hector Fort, Malang Sarr, Jon Pacheco, Sergio Gomez; Joseph Ochieng, Yangel Herrera, Carlos Soler, Goncalo Guedes; Mikel Oyarzabal, Orri Oskarsson

Bournemouth Form Analysis

Bournemouth have produced some brilliant football to open the season, but they haven't been able to convert that quality into any Premier League wins.

Indeed, the Cherries have taken the lead in all four of their EPL outings, but failed to go on with the job, all too often conceding late equalisers.

Marco Rose's side were impressive against Man City in their Premier League opener, but conceded two late goals to fall 2-1, while they've since registered three straight draws against Everton (1-1), Newcastle (2-2) and Brentford (2-2).

Those result see Bournemouth languish down in 15th spot on the EPL ladder as they prepare for a historic first European night here.

Bournemouth Team News

Alex Scott has been in tremendous form to start the season and I don't think it will be too long before the heavyweight clubs come knocking for the midfielder.

Plenty of attacking firepower on show, with Rayan, Justin Kluivert and Marcus Tavernier set to operate behind striker Evanilson, who is still searching for his first goal since February - but has been on hand to provide three assists in four appearances to start the season.

Julian Araujo, Amine Adli, Veljko Milosavljevic and Eli Junior Kroupi are out injured.

Bournemouth Possible Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Djordje Petrovic; Adam Smith, James Hill, Igor Silva, Adrien Truffert; Tyler Adams, Alex Scott; Rayan, Justin Kluivert, Marcus Tavernier; Evanilson

Verdict

Both teams to score is the main play, with a bit of value on a draw. Oyarzabal & Tavernier backed in player props.
