Celtic vs Ferencvaros Europa League Tips & Prediction
Even at home, Celtic's defence can't be trusted - I'm taking Hungarian champions Ferencvaros in the Double Chance market as Socceroos winger Daniel Arzani returns to Celtic Park looking to make an impact in Thursday night's Europa League encounter.
It's a big full circle moment for Arzani, who cruelly ruptured his ACL on his Celtic debut in 2018 after arriving on loan from Manchester City, limiting him to just two appearances at the club. Now 27 years of age, Arzani is only just getting some consistent minutes in Europe, starting the last three games for Ferencvaros and providing two assists. He'd love nothing more than to contribute another goal against his former club and he might well get his chances.
Celtic don't look convincing at all. They almost relinquished the Scottish league to Hearts last term and suffered an embarrassing elimination at the hands of LASK Linz in Champions League qualifying - despite leading 4-0 on aggregate at one stage.
Incredibly, LASK managed a whopping 60 shots across those two legs, responding with five unanswered goals to relegate Celtic into the Europa League.
With Celtic coming off a 3-0 drubbing to rivals Rangers in the League Cup this past weekend, Ferencvaros should fancy themselves to come away with at least a point here.
Both teams are tipped to find the back of the net as the main betting angle, with Ferencvaros holding their own and Arzani an outside shot at another goal involvement. I also like the value on Celtic attacker Camilo Duran to score the opening goal of the match (stats below).
Celtic vs Ferencvaros Stats & Trends
- Celtic have leaked 10 goals across their last six games
- Ferencvaros are unbeaten in 14 of their last 15 games in all comps
- Ferencvaros beat RB Salzburg, Genk, Ludogorets and Rangers in the EL last term, along with a draw vs Fenerbahce in Istanbul
- Celtic conceded 60 shots over two legs vs LASK Linz in CL qualifying earlier this season
- Daniel Arzani has registered two assists in his last three games
- Camilo Duran has scored six goals in his last eight games in all comps, with five coming in the first half
Celtic vs Ferencvaros Head To Head
Celtic and Ferencvaros have met three times since 2020, with the Hoops winning twice and the Hungarian side claiming one victory.
Celtic won both of their most recent encounters during the 2021 Europa League, securing victories home and away. Those results came a year after Ferencvaros had knocked the Scottish giants out of Champions League qualifying with a 2-1 victory at Parkhead.
Celtic Form Analysis
Celtic may have taken a maximum 18 points from their six Scottish Premier League games to be topping the table, five points ahead of Rangers - but there's been some disastrous performances in other competitions to begin the season.
After going out of Champions League qualifying in heartbreaking circumstances last term to Kairat Almaty, Celtic suffered fresh misery, somehow blowing a 4-0 lead against LASK Linz to go down 5-4.
Martin O'Neill's side conceded 60 shots to Linz across those two legs and were all over the place at the back.
Things went from bad to worse last weekend, with Celtic suffering a crushing 3-0 defeat at Ibrox to bitter Glasgow rivals Rangers.
Celtic Team News
Callum Osmand, Alistair Johnston and Jota are out injured, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is suspended.
Celtic need some spark and Egyptian World Cup star Haissem Hassan could provide the necessary impact. Camilo Duran should be the main man up front, with Kasper Hogh struggling after some early-season promise.
Celtic Possible Starting XI(4-2-3-1): Viljami Sinisalo; Colby Donovan, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Auston Trusty, Kieran Tierney; Callum McGregor, Mika Baur; Haissem Hassan, Benjamin Nygren, Sebastian Tounekti; Camilo Duran.
Ferencvaros Form Analysis
Ferencvaros are regulars on the continental stage and secured their spot in a third straight Europa League by upstaging Vojvodina (5-1), Twente (3-2), Gornik (2-1) and Trabzonspor (5-0) in qualifying.
Balazs Borbely has taken charge from former Celtic forward Robbie Keane and overseen an impressive run of form that has seen the Hungarian side go unbeaten in 14 of their last 15 games in all competitions.
The Greens have won 10 of those games, including a most-recent 7-0 drubbing of Debreceni in the Hungarian Cup.
Having made the knockout stage of this competition in the last two years, Ferencvaros will be confident of another memorable campaign this term.
Ferencvaros Team News
Ferencvaros don't appear to have any injury concerns ahead of this clash.
Arzani will be hopeful of a starting spot against his former club after some impressive recent performances.
Kristoffer Zachariassen has scored four goals in his last six outings and should provide a threat going forward against a vulnerable Celtic defence here.
Verdict
Celtic look shaky at the back, so Ferencvaros can pick up at least a point on the road.
