With the Renegades beating Brisbane in the early Saturday game and Perth beating Adelaide in the late one, Melbourne know exactly what they need to do to make finals and it is as simple as a win over the Hurricanes.

Melbourne have been in striking form of late winning 4 straight games to be on the precipice of making finals for the first time since BBL10 in 2019-20 when they finished top of the table and lost the final to the Sydney Sixers. Marcus Stoinis and Ben Duckett are both in the top 10 for runs scored this season but they will need to do it without Duckett who has left to join the Australian team in Sri Lanka.

Hobart have locked up the top spot in the competition already but will be wanting to keep their winning momentum going especially with some new faces in the squad. Mitch Owen has scored the 4th most runs in the comp this season while Riley Meredith is equal 7th in wickets with 11 in 8 games played.

Momentum and form is key in Cricket and Melbourne have just a touch more going for them right now than the Hurricanes who can essentially see this as a warm up game for Tuesday when they take on the Sixers.

I am backing the Stars to get the win and take a spot in the finals. It is expected to be cloudy and hot in Melbourne on Sunday but rain will not affect the outcome. Totals are historically low at the MCG so take the Under.

  • Melbourne bowler Mark Steketee has taken 11 wickets in 4 games with a 9.54 Average and 7 run economy rate, the best figures of any bowler this year.
  • The Stars have 3 batsmen in the top 12 for runs this season.
  • Avg 1st innings total at MCG is 158, avg 2nd innings total is 144 for a 302 total.
  • In all 3 games played at the MCG this season both teams have hit at least 10 fours each.

Melbourne Stars Form

Cometh the man, cometh the moment. Glenn Maxwell has in his last two games scored 58* and 90 to propel his team up the rankings and into a potential finals spot. In the most recent victory against cross town rivals Melbourne Renegades he owned the strike for the majority of the innings after his top order fell cheaply. Maxwell was forgoing singles to shield the lower order from the bowling barrage ensuring they had the opportunity to secure the important victory.

All Melbourne need to do is win this game to make it into the top 4 and a finals appearance. Should Brisbane triumph over the Renegades in Saturday’s first game, they will temporarily move into 4th, 1 point ahead of the Stars.

One of Perth or Adelaide will take a win given they are playing eachother and given their superior Net Run Rate will temporarily push the Stars further down the standings before their game on Sunday. In any case the Stars need to win to secure their future in the tournament, a loss will see them finish outside the top 4.

Marcus Stoinis is ranked 4th among batsmen in the BBL this season with a total of 264 runs. Mark Steketee leads the Stars bowling attack having taken 11 wickets in 4 games.

Hobart Hurricanes Form

Hobart have already taken top spot in the standings and booked themselves a spot against the Sydney Sixers in the Qualifier on Tuesday. The Winner will go through to the Final with the loser taking on the victor of the Knockout Final with those teams yet to be determined.

After losing their first game in style against the Renegades, Hobart went on to go undefeated in the remainder of the season taking wins in both a dominant style as well as with the smallest of margins. They have been able to win both bowling and batting first showing their diversity and ability to adjust to the conditions.

Tall fast bowler Billy Stanlake has been ruled out for the rest of the season but the Canes look to get back Ben McDermott. Chris Jordan is also hoping to be fit to play in this one despite a back injury. Cameron Gannon comes into the squad as a replacement for Stanlake but it is unsure at this stage whether he will play on Sunday.

Riley Meredith has been the best bowler for the Hurricanes, taking 11 wickets in 8 games. Mitch Owen is the 4th ranked batsmen in the league this season.
