Learner Tien and Daniel Merida meet for the first time in a surprising ATP Montreal quarter-final, thanks to an open draw. Tien, ranked No. 19, brings more experience in high-stakes matches, while Merida, riding impressive 2026 form, is making his hardcourt breakthrough. With both players hot on form, the match is expected to be closely fought, but Tien's consistency and track record in longer matches give him the edge. The recommendation is for Tien to advance in three sets. Fans can catch the action live via Unibet (geo-restrictions apply).

Learner Tien vs Daniel Merida ATP Montreal Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

A decimated Canada Masters draw has led to Learner Tien and Daniel Merida making the quarter-finals - it's a great chance for both to reach a first 1000-level semi-final, but it's Tien who holds more experience in these big matches, with the American favoured to advance in three sets on Tuesday.

If it wasn't for Rafael Jodar's seismic rise to the cusp of the top 10, there would have been a lot more chatter surrounding Merida, who has climbed from outside of the top 180 in February to a live ranking of No. 40 after this breakout run to a maiden Masters 1000 quarter-final.

The 21-year-old from Spain has compiled an impressive 16-7 record at tour-level and is proving he is more than just a classic clay courter, making an impact at in just his second ever tour event on hardcourt.

Merida has won nine of his last 10 matches and I think he can make this clash with Tien competitive.

However, the 20-year-old American is just a little more advanced with his tennis at the moment, coming into this encounter inside the world's top 20 and with previous Grand Slam and Masters 1000 quarter-final matches under his belt.

After injury troubles at Wimbledon, Tien looks like he is getting back to some of his best tennis and this is a fantastic opportunity to make a first Masters semi-final.

Tien doesn't really have a big weapon and his serve isn't the strongest, so he is prone to finding himself in lengthy battles, which is why Merida should have his chances to take a set and push this over 21.5 games. But the American has better consistency and that steady game should shine through in the end.
  • Tien has seen Over 21.5 games in six of his last nine ATP matches
  • Merida has seen Over 21.5 games in four of his last six matches
  • Tien has won 11 of his last 15 matches
  • Merida has won 10 of his last 11 matches
  • Tien has won eight of his last nine matches vs players outside the top 50
  • Merida has a 0-2 record vs top 20 players

Tien vs Merida Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Learner Tien Form Analysis

  • 2026 ATP Record: 24-13
  • ATP Canada Record: 6-1
  • Current Ranking: No. 19
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 15 (March 2026)

Tien has established himself as a top 20 player at 20 years of age - but he will be hell-bent on pushing towards the top 10 by the end of the year.

The American will probably have to develop more firepower if he is to seriously challenge for Masters and Grand Slam titles, but he's laying a great foundation and is already enjoying some big results, including reaching the Australian Open and Indian Wells quarter-finals.

Tien has also translated his game over to clay, winning his second ATP title in Geneva before making the third round at Roland Garros.

Unfortunately, Tien was struck down by health issues at Wimbledon, contributing to a first round loss, while he was rusty in his return to hardcourts in Washington, losing his opener to Adrian Mannarino.

It appeared as if Tien's struggles could continue in Montreal after he dropped the second set 0-6 to Gael Monfils, but he bounced back to win in three and he hasn't lost a set since, cruising past Tommy Paul 6-3 6-2 and Thiago Agustin Tirante 6-4 6-4.

Daniel Merida Form Analysis

  • 2026 ATP Record: 16-7
  • ATP Canada Record: 4-0
  • Current Ranking: No. 63
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 59 (July 2026)

It's been a stunning and underrated rise for Merida, who is set to make his top 40 debut after this tournament.

Incredibly, Merida only played his first tour-level event in March, but he's swiftly cemented himself as a tour regular and who knows, if he keeps this up he might be seeded by the US Open.

The 21-year-old made the final of Bucharest in just his second ATP event before going on to reach the third round of the Madrid Masters.

Merida continued his impressive form by capturing his first ATP title on the clay of Umag just after Wimbledon - and he's carried that level over to hardcourt, where he's surprised everyone to advance into a first Masters 1000 quarter-final here in Montreal.

The Spaniard overcame Liam Draxl in three sets in the first round before a 6-3 6-3 beatdown of 22nd seed Ugo Humbert. Merida then edged out Alex Michelsen 6-4 6-7(4) 6-1 before crushing Tallon Griekspoor for the loss of just four games, 6-3 6-1.
