In their first-ever meeting, Joao Fonseca faces Arthur Rinderknech at the Monte Carlo Masters. Fonseca is on a promising run despite past tough defeats by top players like Sinner and Alcaraz. Meanwhile, Rinderknech struggles with consistency and hasn't found his best form on clay. Fonseca, who has recovered from a recent back injury, is looking to leverage his current momentum. The forecast predicts Fonseca taking the win in straight sets as Rinderknech's serve is less effective on clay.

Arthur Rinderknech vs Joao Fonseca Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Joao Fonseca continues his debut Monte Carlo Masters campaign when he comes up against Arthur Rinderknech in the second round on Wednesday.

Finally, Fonseca has a decent draw to go deep at a Masters 1000. After running into Jannik Sinner in the R16 of Indian Wells and Carlos Alcaraz in the second round of Miami, the rising star has Rinderknech - who is certainly nowhere near his best on clay - in the second round of Monte Carlo before a potential meeting with either Matteo Berrettini or Daniil Medvedev. Again, both not at their best on this surface, so a quarter-final is a distinct possibility.

But, one match at a time. Fonseca cruised in his opening round match over Gabriel Diallo and he's got back to his best tennis after a back injury disrupted his start to the year. Rinderknech has a huge serve, but it's not as effective on the dirt, while he's not been performing at the level that saw him make the Shanghai Masters final last year. Current form and surface favour Fonseca and I'm backing the Brazilian to advance in straights.
  • Fonseca has won eight of his last 11 matches vs top 30 players
  • Rinderknech has lost nine of his last 11 matches vs top 40 players on clay
  • Four of Fonseca's last six wins have been in straight sets
  • Four of Rinderknech's last five defeats have been in straight sets
  • It's taken Sinner & Alcaraz to beat Fonseca in his last two tournaments

Rinderknech vs Fonseca Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Arthur Rinderknech Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 6-7
  • ATP Monte Carlo Record: 1-1
  • Current Ranking: No. 27
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 26 (Jan 2026)

Rinderknech surged into the top 30 on the back of a strong finish to last year, highlighted of course by his run to the Shanghai Masters final.

However, the big-serving Frenchman hasn't been able to reproduce that sort of form consistently throughout the opening months of 2026.

The 30-year-old has suffered opening exits at the Australian Open, Rotterdam, Doha and Miami. Rinderknech has shown glimpses of great tennis, especially in two close defeats to Alcaraz in Doha and Indian Wells, but the consistency against lower-ranked opponents just isn't there.

Rinderknech won his first ever match at the Monte Carlo Masters in his opening round, taking out the severely out-of-form Karen Khachanov 7-5 6-2.

Joao Fonseca Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 6-5
  • ATP Monte Carlo Record: 1-0
  • Current Ranking: No. 40
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 24 (Nov 2025)

After picking up the ATP 500 title in Basel late last year, it looked like Fonseca could break into the world's top 20 in the first quarter of 2026.

However, a back injury prevented him from producing his best tennis during the Aussie summer and Golden Swing in February.

Fortunately, it appears Fonseca is now fully recovered, because he played some brilliant tennis across the Sunshine Double.

The 19-year-old made the fourth round of Indian Wells and pushed Sinner to a pair of tiebreaks, while he reached the second round of Miami, where Alcaraz proved too strong.

Making his Monte Carlo debut this tournament, Fonseca breezed past Gabriel Diallo 6-2 6-3 in his opening match.
