Arthur Fils vs Luca Van Assche ATP Tokyo Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Arthur Fils is backed to improve to 6-0 in the Japan Open main draw when he comes up against countryman Luca Van Assche in the first round in Tokyo on Wednesday.

Fils already has two matches under his belt in Tokyo. After missing the entry deadline, Fils was forced to come through qualifying, which he did with wins over Martin Damm and Kamil Majchrzak - but he went three sets in both victories.

Fresh from making his top 10 debut following a Masters 1000 breakthrough in Cincinnati, Fils is arguably the second-favourite for the Japan Open title behind Carlos Alcaraz, with the Frenchman reigning supreme at the ATP 500 tournament in 2024.

Fils should be too strong for his fellow Frenchman in this opening round contest, with Van Assche going 0-4 against top 10 players throughout his career.

However, Van Assche has taken a set in three of those four matches and he's currently enjoying a career-best season, peaking at No. 40 in the world.

With Fils dropping 1+ set in his last four matches, this might not be so straightforward for the World No. 9.

I'm taking Fils with a short -2.5 games line with Over 18.5 total games as the best bet. Smaller stake on Fils prevailing in three.

Fils vs Van Assche Stats & Trends

Fils has won 16 of his last 22 matches at all levels
Fils has dropped 1+ set in his last four matches at all levels
Fils has a 5-0 record in Tokyo, dropping 1+ set in four of those matches
Van Assche has a 0-4 record vs top 10 players, winning 1+ set in three
Van Assche has lost three of his last four tour-level R1 matches

Fils vs Van Assche Head To Head

These two haven't met at tour-level, but Fils leads 1-0 following a four-set win at the Next Gen ATP Finals in 2023.

Arthur Fils Form Analysis

2026 ATP Record: 32-11
ATP Tokyo Record: 5-0
Current Ranking: No. 9
Career-High Ranking: No. 9 (Sep 2026)

It's been a remarkable rise into the top 10 for Fils when you consider he's missed five of the last 12 months through a series of injury problems.

After missing the back-end of last year, the only way is up for Fils - he has zero points to defend for ther rest of the year and is strongly positioned to make his year-end ATP Finals debut.

Fils landed a big career milestone during the North American hardcourt summer, claiming his maiden Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati, defeating Frances Tiafoe in the final.

However, it was a hugely disappointing US Open for Fils as he crashed out in the first round to Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets.

Incredibly, Fils needed to go through qualifying in Tokyo despite his top 10 status after forgetting to sign in before the entry deadline. It hasn't proved harmful - Fils picked up an extra 25 ranking points in three-set wins over Damm and Majchrzak to take his place in the main draw.

Luca Van Assche Form Analysis

2026 ATP Record: 10-8
ATP Tokyo Record: 0-0
Current Ranking: No. 43
Career-High Ranking: No. 40 (Aug 2026)

Van Assche has spent the last couple of years battling injuries and struggling to make the transition from the Challenger circuit to the ATP Tour, but he's managed to break that barrier in 2026.

Clay has been the Frenchman's best surface this season, with Van Assche making the quarter-finals in Marrakech and second round at Roland Garros before landing his first ATP title in Estoril, beating the likes of Alexander Blockx and Andrey Rublev along the way.

However, the 22-year-old has gone 1-4 in his last five tour-level matches, suffering first round exits in Canada and Cincinatti - but he did win a round at the US Open, beating Cameron Norrie before falling to Denis Shapovalov.
